SCOTS START BETTER THAN ENGLISH IN MAJORCA


Carnoustie's Jess Meek and Lauren Whyte (St Andrews) outscored their highly-rated English rivals in the first qualifying round of the Spanish women's amateur golf championship at Pula Golf Club, Majorca today.
Meek returned a three-over-par 75 to share 13th place behind the two-shot leader, Spain#s Luna Sobron Galmes.Scottish U18 girls champion Whyte shot a 76 to be in joint 17th place.
Clara Young (North Berwick) had an 84 for joint 80th position. England's Amber Ratcliffe and Gabriella Cowley, the Scottish U16 champion from last year, were both on the 78 mark.
After tomorrow's second qualifying round, the leading 64 players will go forward to the match-play stages
