ENGLAND SEND SIX TOP-NOTCHERS TO SCOTTISH U16s CHAMPIONSHIP
NEWS RELEASE FROM ENGLAND GOLF Teenagers to challenge for Scottish honours Six talented teenagers, including English U15 champion Sophie Madden, will represent England Golf in the Scottish U16 open stroke play championship at Strathmore from April 4-5. They will compete in two groups in the international team event, which is played in conjunction with the 36-hole individual championship. Sophie will be joined in Team A by Eloise Healey and Alice Hewson, while Team B consists of Emma Allen, Sophie Lamb and Victoria Mallett. All six girls are members of England Golf training squads. The players: Eloise Healey, 15, (West Lancashire) represented England in the annual U16 match against Spain and played for Lancashire in last year’s County Finals, winning six out of eight matches. She had a successful trip to the USA at Christmas, notably finishing second in the Pars Florida International. Alice Hewson, 15 (Berkhamsted) is a past English U13 titleholder and was runner up in last year’s U15 championship. She is the East Region and Hertfordshire schools’ champion and was fifth in the Scottish U16s last year. Sophie Madden, 16 (West Essex) won the English U15 championship last year and has also been runner-up in the U13 event. She was a member of the winning Essex team at County Finals and is also a past winner of the East region girls’ title and the US Kids world championship. Emma Allen, 16, (Meon Valley) won the Hampshire girls’ and ladies’ titles last season and was runner-up in the South region girls’ championship. She also had top ten finishes in three prestigious ladies’ scratch events: the Astor Salver, the Hampshire Rose and the Pleasington Putter. Sophie Lamb, 15, (Clitheroe) won the North Region foursomes and the Lancashire girls’ championship and represented Lancashire at County Finals, winning eight out of nine matches. She played for England U16s against Spain last year. Victoria Mallett, 14, (Sutton Coldfield Ladies’) was another member of the winning England team which played Spain at Pannal last season. She is a past Midland South girls’ champion and last year helped Warwickshire win the team shield at the regional women’s championship.
