NEWS RELEASE
London 2012 Great
Britain hockey bronze medallist Chloe Rogers showed that she’s also more than
handy with a set of golf clubs by helping England register a third successive
win in the prestigious Ladies Golf Cup World Final at Spain’s La Manga Club.
Rogers, who plays
off a handicap of four at Braintree Golf Club, had no trouble swapping her
hockey stick for golf clubs and played a leading role as England held off
nearest challengers Thailand to claim victory in the 36-hole competition.
The 27-year-old
Leicester Ladies star, who has won more than 160 combined caps for England and
Great Britain, won both her matches on La Manga Club’s famous fairways and was
one of only two players to score maximum points at the international event.
Entering the
final day on the resort’s renowned South Course, Rogers and her three team-mates
– Ann Hynes from Burhill GC, Enmore’s Jayne Errington and Nicola Clarke from
Castle Royle GC – held a slender one-point advantage over their rivals from
Thailand, with Portugal three points further back.
With each nation
represented in four four-balls and points awarded on a sliding scale with the
top Stableford scorer in each group receiving three points, there was plenty to
play for and Thailand started strongly, levelling the scores when their leading
player claimed a maximum return.
But the England
quartet, who were sponsored by Callaway, Tommy Hilfiger and Golf Queen, were in
no mood to surrender their title and scored strongly in the remaining matches,
culminating with a second maximum from Rogers as they finished on 18 points,
three ahead of Thailand.
Rogers tweeted
immediately after the victory: “We can report on a team England victory. Event
great fun!”
Ben Lambourne, UK
licensee for the Ladies Golf Cup, said: “The La Manga Club resort lived up to
all its expectations and provided a wonderful platform with all its five-star
facilities to ensure everyone enjoyed a memorable experience. Hats off to
England for completing a hat-trick of victories at the world final.”
More than 1,500
ladies took part in the 2012 competition, with four winners qualifying from
each country and earning a trip to Spain to enjoy the first-class facilities La
Manga Club has to offer on and off the course.
La Manga Club is
one of Europe’s leading golf destinations with three first-class courses. It
