JESS MEEK WELL BEATEN IN MAJORCA MATCH-PLAY
Carnoustie's Jess Meek, who played so well in the stroke-play qualifying rounds to be the leading British player in 10th place, was beaten 6 and 5 in the first round of the match-play at the Spanish women's amateur international golf championship at Pula Golf Club, Majorca. Meek lost out to the 23rd qualifier, V Carta, from Italy. Only one English player reached the last 16 - last year's Scottish U16 championship winner at Strathmore, Gabriella Cowley (West Essex). The 24th qualifier, Gabriella KO'd the No 9 seed, V Troeltsch (Germany) by two holes. Amber Ratcliffe (Royal Cromer) lost at the 19th to C Chevalier (France) while Alexandra Peters (Notts Ladies) lost by two holes to L Strom (Sweden). LATER NEWS Gabriella Cowley was beaten 4 and 2 by Sweden's E Svennson in the second round.
