JACK McDONALD LEADS STUDENTS' FIELD BY FIVE AT CRAIL CRAIGHEAD
REPORT FROM DR ROB MACPHERSON
On a windy day which made even the past weekend's Battle Trophy conditions seem benign, the best of the UK's student golfers struggled round the first 18 holes of the 2013 BUCS Student Tour Championship Finals at Crail Golfing Society's Craighead links.
The women's championship saw two excellent rounds by University of Exeter's Katie Bradbury and by local student from the University of St Andrews, Gabrielle MacDonald.
Both shot scores of 77 (+3) and are two shots ahead of Rebecca Gibbs (Kingston).
In the men's championship, a stunning round of 73 (+1) in worsening conditions by Jack McDonald (University of Stirling), fifth in the Battle Trophy round the same course, leads the field and his compatrions, Partick Spraggs and Mike Howard (both Stirling), by five shots.
Also on 78 is Patrick Mullins (University of Wales, Newport) and one short further back are the Exeter duo Nick Wildman and Laurie Potter. McDonald's round could have been even better. He played the first nine holes in 35 (-2) but, as the wind strengthened and changed direction, he faltered a little on the way in bogeying two of the last three for his +1 total.
The competition continues with 36 holes on Wednesday and concludes on Thursday.
