Rotherham's Olivia Winning maintained her overnight lead in the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play with a three-under-par round of 72 for an eight-under par tally of 142 with the third and final round - over Royal Troon's Open championship links to come on Sunday.
Olivia, 18, birdied the third, fourth, sixth, eighth, ninth and 10th in halves of 35 (three under) and 37 (level). She bogeyed the second, seventh and 14th.
Olivia was in England’s winning team at the 2012 girls’ Home Internationals and already this year has qualified for the matchplay stages of the French lady Junior Championship and shot the low score in the Hampshire Rose, with a six-under 67.
Last season she won the Pleasington Putter and was runner-up in another prestigious scratch event, the Astor Salver, and in the Fairhaven Trophy. She has also represented England in the European Young Masters and in the annual U16 match against Spain. She is a past Yorkshire girls’ champion and has been runner-up in the North of England U16s and the Northern ladies’ and girls’ championships.
Olivia trains with the England Golf Girls’ Performance Squad.
On a sunny - but far from warm - day, the wind was less strong and more to the east than yesterday's blustery west wind which made the closing holes such a trial, and defending champion Amy Boulden (Conwy) and Curtis Cup team-mate Bronte Law (Bramhall) grabbed the low-scoring possibilities - before the wind was expected to rise as the day progressed - with rounds of eight-under 67 and seven-under 68 respectively.Amy had an eagle (at the long sixth) and four birdies plus one bogey for an outward 33 but Bronte bettered that with a magnificent seven-under 31 to the turn.
She birdied every hole except the first and seventh (which she parred).
Law, who will miss the "British" due to studies for her A-levels, eagled the par-5 12th but a three-putt bogey at the short 10th and further bogeys at the 16th and 17th where she missed the green at both holes dragged her down to a par-matching 37 home.
Boulden was on 143, one behind leader Winning and level with Rachael Goodall (Heswall) who added a 70 to her opening 73.
Rachael as a good recent record in the "Helen Holm." She finished joint fifth last year when she had a hole in one at the 17th on Royal Troon.
Law was in fourth place on 145, three shots in arrears of Winning but already the stage was being set for last-round drama on Sunday at Royal Troon.
