STIRLING V UDI IN STUDENTS; TEAM MATCH-PLAY FINAL

Scottish Student Sport Golf Championships 2013

 

Friday’s final for the 2013 Scottish Student Sport Golf Team Matchplay Championships will be a battle of old and new; experienced and first timers; national and local.

 Multiple past winners, the “Stirling Spartans” will take on first-time finalists the “Fighting Beavers” of the University of the Highlands and Islands.

 In Thursday' ’s semi finals, UHI shocked second seeds University of Aberdeen to take both the morning foursome series and the afternoon single series to cruise to an impressive 9-6 win overall. In the foursomes, Ross Black and Prashob Nair (UHI) set the tone with an impressive 4&3 victory over Maxwell and Crummey (Aberdeen). Subsequent victories for Leith and Mackinnon (UHI) and McNeill and Whittet (UHI) consolidated the morning lead. The afternoon singles saw UHI stretch their advantage and, at half way, they were up in seven of the ten matches being played. The back nine continued to turn in UHI’s favour and a great middle order performance saw them home. In the second semi-final, University of Stirling also established an early lead with a 4-1 series victory in the foursomes which they never let go. Despite valiant rearguard actions from Vincent Blom, Freddie Edmunds and Ben Jamieson (St Andrews) the underlying strength depth of the Stirling team was brought to bear. Scottish Universities Individual Champion Mathias Eggenberger led the team home with a 2 hole victory over Guy Dalziel.
