UNIVERSITY OF ST ANDREWS GHALLENGE

NEWS RELEASE

Dear Sir/Madam,

Inaugural University of St Andrews Ladies’ Challenge

As part of the University of St Andrews’ 600-year celebrations we are proud to launch a female equivalent event of the Boyd Quaich, the University of St Andrews Ladies’ Challenge.  The Boyd Quaich is a world-famous golf tournament held in St Andrews. Each year, 72 elite-level male golfers compete to win the Quaich which dates back to 1946. The tournament is played in honour of two former St Andrews students who lost their lives in World War 2 and the aim of the event is the same today as when it was launched; that students from around the world should meet through friendly competition on the golf courses of St Andrews. The Boyd Quaich tournament motto is, “To the lasting friendship of all nations”, and this idea is passed on to all competitors each year.

The ambition and spirit for this prestigious event is the same as for men’s event - to welcome international female student golfers from around the world to embrace the concept of friendship and competitive rivalry in the “home of golf”.

This year, the tournament will be held from 9th to 11th July 2013. The format is individual strokeplay over 54 holes and your university is invited to enter a maximum of two female students.  In the first year, the starting field will be 36 female golfers, but in future years it is hoped that a full cohort of 72 players will participate, equivalent to that of the Boyd Quaich. This tournament will be played on the prestigious golf courses based at the Links (Jubilee) and the Fairmont Hotel (the Torrance) and will be run as an R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking event.

The handicap limit is 8 and the first 20 places of handicap 4.4 and below will be guaranteed entry based on a first-come, first-served basis. The following 16 available places will be accepted with the lowest handicaps.  Competitors must provide a verified current handicap certificate on their arrival in St Andrews. The closing date for entry is 31st May 2013.

Accommodation is subsidised and available in a University residence called University Hall. This is located about 0.75 miles from the Old Course and 3.5 miles from the Fairmont Hotel. The launch dinner will be held on Monday 8th July at the Fairmont Hotel.

Alternative accommodation is available at the Fairmont Hotel. Please contact the Fairmont directly to arrange:
