Classic
Four of Carnoustie Country’s top links
courses were the scene of a hotly contested tournament last week when 80
golfers from across the globe competed in the Carnoustie Country Classic.
Golfers from Denmark, Germany,
Ireland, Sierra Leone, the UK
and the USA
played in the tournament, which is held over Carnoustie Championship course and
the Open qualifiers Montrose Medal, Monifieth Medal and Panmure Medal.
Following
the four rounds, the winners were announced at a prizegiving dinner, with:
Bryan
Broberg, who is from Nova Scotia but now lives
in Sierra Leone,
named the winner of the Men’s Championship.
Lesley Dudgeon from Reigate winning
the Ladies Championship
Phil Bailey from Walsall
clinched the Seniors’ Trophy.
“I love
coming here to play golf,” said Bryan Broberg. “I won this tournament in 2007
and, hopefully, I’ll be back to defend my title next year.”
2013 competitor
Rick Page from North Carolina
is also planning to attend next year’s Carnoustie Country Classic, which will
take place from 19-22 May, 2014.
“I’d come back here in a heartbeat,” said
Rick. “I’ve really enjoyed my visit to Carnoustie Country. Everyone is so friendly
and the highlight was playing on Carnoustie Championship, the Open course where
so many of the golfing greats have played.”
Judy Winter
from New Jersey
was one of the 14 ladies who played in this year’s Carnoustie Country Classic.
“All the courses were great,” said Judy, who came third in the Ladies Championship.
“What a wonderful experience!”
And it wasn’t
only the competitors who enjoyed the Carnoustie Country Classic – so did the
golf clubs who work together to organise and host this annual event.
“The whole
week has gone very well,” said Bill Miller, Chair of Monifieth Golf Links.
“This is the ninth year of the Carnoustie Country Classic and this is the best
crowd ever. The atmosphere’s been fantastic, with lots of very happy golfers on
all four courses.”
The Carnoustie
Country Classic was also attended by two top golf journalists, Peter Ellegard,
who writes for, amongst other publications, Great Golf Magazine, and Felix Reid
from Germany’s
top golf website golf.de.
“The course are in incredibly good condition,” said Peter,
who was making his first trip to Carnoustie Country, which covers thirty
courses within a forty minute drive of Carnoustie. “I’ve had an absolutely
fantastic time in Carnoustie Country.”
At the
prizegiving evening, one of the several social events held during the
tournament, the prizes were presented by the Provost of Angus, Mrs Helen
Oswald.
“Judging by the happy buzz around the room and the chat going on
between friends old and new, the Carnoustie Country Classic is obviously an
enjoyable and popular golf tournament,” said the Provost. “It’s also a wonderful
showcase not only for the four courses which feature in the tournament but also
for the stunning scenery, first class food, fascinating history and, of course,
the warm Carnoustie Country welcome that make this part of Scotland so
special.”
