California, the No. 1-ranked team in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, won the Pac-12 Championship by nine shots at Los Angeles (Calif.) Country Club on Wednesday -- its second consecutive conference title.
This Pac-12 title is the Golden Bears 10th victory of the season in 12 tournaments. Cal ties the record set by Oklahoma State in 1985-86 for most victories in a season with 10. The team will have the NCAA Regional and NCAA field to set a new record.
“We really didn’t want to talk about it, but last night we did and it’s pretty cool, and it was so special. I’m not familiar with that Oklahoma State team, but they must have been one heck of a team because its just so special," said Cal's Max Homa, who won the individual title by five shots.
"Everything is just going our way. We just work really hard and work to the end. I couldn’t imagine winning 10 tournament in my career here at Cal, but in one season is pretty special.”
Heading into the final round, California lead No. 5 UCLA by four shots, but increased the lead throughout the day. In the play-six-count-five format, Cal finished the final-round with an even-par 350 and a tournament total of 6-over 1,406. In second was UCLA at 15-over 1,415. In third was Washington at 1,432, followed by Stanford at 1,454 and rounding out the top five was Arizona State at 1,456.
Homa won his first individual title of the season with a five-shot victory over teammate Michael Weaver. Homa shot rounds of 61-70-71-69. His 61 on Monday was a course record at LACC. It included nine birdies and zero bogeys.
“It was really cool breaking course record at LACC and at Pac 12s is just awesome. Everything has come together,” said Homa.
“It felt great (to get my first win). I watched everyone around win week after week this season. I played great last week and really ever since Hawaii. I’m playing against really good players and it's really validating. To see it pay off, it just means to much.”
