GORDON'S COLLEGE AND HAZLEHEAD REMATCH IN ABERDEEN SCHOOLS FINAL ON MONDAY
ROBERT
GORDON’S COLLEGE AND HAZLEHEAD
CONTEST
SCHOOLS’ FINAL
By Derek Johnston
In
a rematch of the 2010 Final, Robert Gordon’s College and Hazlehead Academy will
contest Monday’s Paul Lawrie Foundation sponsored Aberdeen Schools’ League
Trophy at Murcar Links.
In last night’s semi-finals, held at Craibstone Golf Club, Hazlehead comfortably
defeated defending champions Aberdeen Grammar School 3-0 whilst Robert Gordon’s
College won by the narrowest margins on a countback after they had drawn with
Cults Academy.
Michael
Lawrie and Dylan Smith won the first tie for Gordon’s by beating Adam Fisher
and Lewys Anderson 2 and 1. Lawrie, the recently crowned Aberdeen Schools’
Strokeplay Champion got, what was to prove, the all-important birdie on the 17th.
With
the second tie ending all square, the Cults pairing attaining equality on the
final green, the third tie was always going to be the decider – and so it
proved. The Cults pair of Ben Henderson
and Kirsten Pryde got off to a flyer, winning three of the first seven
holes. However their dogged opponents,
Conor Forbes and Finlay Simon stuck to their task before eventually succumbing
by 2 holes. This would prove decisive
(and heart breaking for the Cults players) because under the points-up format
it meant that Robert Gordon’s had secured a final place by one point (on a
countback of 3 to 2).
