LAST SCOTS BOW OUT OF BRITISH WOMEN'S OPEN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Scotland's
Jess Meek, Rachael Watton and Eilidh Briggs failed to make it to the
last 16 of the British women's open amateur golf championship at
Machynys Golf Club, near Llanelli, South
Wales.
But
it was not for lack of effort on a
day when even the World No 2, Su-Hyun Oh (Australia) was trounced by
Lisa Maguire from Ireland and defending champion Stephanie Meadow bowed
out in
the second round to a French player.
Meek
came back from two down after 13 to be all square in her first-round
tie against Caroline Nistrup, the Danish player who led at the end of
the first qualifying round. The Carnoustie Ladies player actually faced a
12ft putt on the 18th green. Had she holed it, Jess would have made the
last 32. But she missed it and lost at the 20th.
Watton
won her morning tie in the strong wind and rain by one hole against
Natalia Escuriola but lost to another Spanish player, Luna Sobron, by 2
and 1 after being all square at the turn. Sobron gained the edge on the
inward half to be one up on the 14th tee.
Eilidh
Briggs (Kilmacolm) scored a very good two-hole win over Emily Pedersen,
a Danish player whose this season has won the Spanish women's open
amateur title and, more recently, the German girls' open championship.
Because
some ties went into extra holes, Eilidh had to hang around for ages,
waiting for her next tie to start. Eventually Emma Carberry (Highwoods)
won her match at the 19th but the Briggs-Carberry second-round match for
a place in the last 16 did not set out - albeit in glorious sunshine -
until after 5pm.The East Sussex player beat the Scot by two holes after the match was all square on the 13th tee.
