Lauren Taylor, after a successful freshman season on the US college circuit as a student at Baylor University, Waco in Texas, looked in fine fettle for next week's British women's open amateur championship when she posted a seven-under-par aggregate over 36 holes to win the Astor Salver by six strokes at The Berkshire Golf Club today.

The Woburn player was the youngest ever winner of the "British" at Royal Portrush two years ago at the age of 16 but missed out on a Curtis Cup team place at Nairn last year because of a neck injury.
She is obviously a fighting fit contender for a place in the GB and I team for the Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe at Chantilly, near Paris at the end of this month.
Lauren had scores of three-under-par 70 over The Berkshire's Red Course and four-under 68 over the Blue Course for a brilliant seven-under total of 138.
Said Lauren:
"Was great to win the Astor Salver. I played really solid all day, making lots of birdies and minimising my mistakes. It was good to have my dad on the bag too which was a big help. Was a nice warm-up before the British. My game is in a good place so hoping for a good week at Machynys. "
Rugby-based Taylor, pictured, finished in champion style with an eagle 3 at the 15th and a birdie at the 18th.
Joint runners-up on 144 were Rachael Goodall, from the Heswall club on the Wirral, Cheshire, and Welsh champion Becky Harriest (Haverfordwest). Rachael followed up a 75 with an excellent round of 69 over the Blue course.
Becky had a pair of steady 72s.
