ENGLAND QUARTET FOR EUROPEAN YOUNG MASTERS

Marco Penge, the newly crowned English Under-15 and Under-16 champion, is among a strong group of four to compete in the European Young Masters tournament at Hamburger Golf Club in Germany from Thursday to Saturday this week.
Penge (Worthing, Sussex) and Under-16 runner-up Bradley Moore (Kedleston Park, Derbyshire) will compete in the boys’ event while girl internationals Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire) and Sophie Madden (West Essex, Essex) will contest the girls’ competition.
Penge won the McGregor Trophy at Seacroft Golf Club in Lincolnshire last week, bringing his tally of victories this season to four and he currently heads the Titleist/FootJoy England Golf Boys' Order of Merit.
Moore played in the Young Masters last year in Hungary and finished fifth. This year, the 15 year old has won the McEvoy Trophy, the Midland Region schools championship and was the leading individual in the Midland boys’ qualifying. He also made his debut for England in the recent European boys’ team championship at Murcar Links, Aberdeen.
Penge also made his debut in the European boys’ team championships, having won the Fairhaven Trophy and the South Region schools championship this year. He also finished runner-up in the Irish boys’ open championship and lost on countback in the individual ranking in the South-east boys’ qualifying.
Alice Hewson and Sophie Madden were both members of the England team which finished fourth in last week’s European girls’ team championship in Sweden. Last month they represented GB and I in the Junior Vagliano Trophy match against an U16 team from Continental Europe.
Alice is the Scottish U16 open stroke play champion. She is a past winner of the English U13 girls’ title and was runner up to Sophie in last year’s U15 English girls’ championship.
Sophie tied second at this season’s Irish U18 stroke play championship and helped England win the team event. She was a member of the winning Essex team at the 2012 County Finals.
The format of the European Young Masters is 54 holes of stroke play with a Nations Cup over the first two rounds, the best three scores from four to count.
