Emma to defend English mid-amateur title
Sussex golfer Emma Carberry will defend her title this week when the English women’s open mid-amateur championship is played at John O’Gaunt Golf Club, Bedfordshire, from Thursday to Sunday, 15-18 August. Emma (Image © Leaderboard Photography), from Highwoods, won the title in exceptional circumstances last year, when torrential rain played havoc with the schedule. The matchplay event was changed to a stroke play competition, which Emma won by three shots. She went on to also win the South region women's championship. This year’s mid-amateur reverts to the normal format, with the full field playing 36 holes of stroke play qualifying on the first day. The leading 32 players will qualify for the matchplay knockout, which ends with the final on Sunday, August 18. The event, which is open to players aged 18 and over, has also attracted English amateur champion and international Sarah-Jane Boyd (Truro) and Singapore-based Charlotte Thomas, who was runner-up in last week’s English stroke play championship. Three Bedfordshire players are also in the field: Sophie Hillier and Cecilia Holden, who are members of the host club; and Jocelyn Faris from Bedford and County.
