CATRIONA MATTHEW MAKES MOVE IN SECOND ROUND AT ARCHERFIELD
FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Catriona Matthew vaulted into pole position early in the second round of the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open on Saturday morning.
After a 5.30am rise for a 7.30am tee time, Matthew set out in cold and windy autumnal conditions but wasted little time in getting the red numbers on the leader board.
Although she started with a bogey on 10, she picked up shots on 11, 16 and 18 for a back nine total of 34 to sit one stroke behind the first-round leader, Cassandra Kirkland, at halfway.
She then birdied the second, third, fifth and seventh before a ‘silly bogey’ on eight and made a solid up and down on the ninth green for a 67 and a 36-hole total of six-under-par.
“I’m delighted!” said Matthew, who made the putt to win The Solheim Cup outright for the European Team in Colorado a fortnight ago.
“I played well and made a few putts today so very pleased. It’s still pretty windy, about the same as yesterday. I’m obviously going to be in a good position. Who knows if I’ll be leading or not but I’ll certainly be up there.”
Two years ago Matthew romped to a 10 stroke margin of victory in this, her home event at Archerfield Links, just three miles from her home in North Berwick, but wasn’t getting carried away.
“I played really well that week. I obviously had a bit of luck to win by that much. There are a lot of good players out there. I’ll try to have another good round tomorrow,” said the world number 10, with 10 victories to her credit, including the 2009 Ricoh Women’s British Open.
Matthew played with Martin Gilbert, the Chief Executive of Aberdeen Asset Management, in the Pro-Am element of the competition, who was impressed with her game.
He said: “She’s like Retief Goosen: zen like!”
As the second round continued in bright but chilly conditions, Frenchwomen Anne-Lise Caudal and Cassandra Kirkland were the next closest challengers, two strokes back on four-under-par. Caudal was four-under after 15 holes while first round leader Kirkland, who opened with a 68, started her second round after Matthew was already in the clubhouse, at 12.40pm.
