HOLE IN ON-E BY LOCKETT AS BRITISH GIRLS SCORING IMPROVES WITH WEATHER

MEGAN LOCKETT .... Hole in one at 10th

The CSS for yesterday's first round, played in windy conditions, was four-over-par 78 but with no wind at Fairhaven Golf Club, Lytham St Annes for the second qualifying round of the British girls open amateur championship today, the scores were set to improve considerably.

Carrying that to its extreme, Megan Lockett from Huddersfield, who played for Wales in last week's Girls Home Internationals at St Annes Old Links, had a hole in one at the 10th (177yd).

In the first round late finisher Rochelle Morris (Woodsome Hall) led by two shots with a 70 and Bethan Popel (Long Ashton), with a 72, was the only other player in the field of 144 to get under the par of 74.

But, after early rain today, the sun came out and playing conditions were pleasant.

There were a couple of early 72s by Ana Pelaez (Spain) and Emma Broze (France), and two 73s, by Malene Kroelboell Hansen (Denmark) and Emma Allen (Meon Valley).

Later Irish girl internatinal left hander Mary Doyle (The Heath) had a 72 also.

Scores under 80 were commonplace, in contrast to the first round.

Difficult to predict what the qualifying cut-off aggregate will be because the players are capable of shaving several shots off their first-day efforts.

But two players who figured in last week's Girls Home Internationals at St Annes Old Links faced a long and anxious wait to see if their totals would be low enough to get through among the top 64 to the match-play stages.

Ireland's Olivia Mehaffey is on 165 after rounds of 81 and 84 while Lauren Whyte, last year's Scottish U18 girls champion, is on 169 (87-82).

Lauren's international team-mate Heather Munro (Monifieth) should be "safe" on 159 after rounds of 77 and 82 while a third member of the Scotland team, Lesley Atkins (Gullane Ladies) is on 162 with rounds of 82 and 80.
