CONTINUING THE DEBATE ON WHY LONG ESTABLISHED TOURNAMENTS ARE BEING CANCELLED

E-MAIL FROM ANN SMART

Hi Colin
Was very interested to read Carol’s comments on the Kirkwood Golf Website.  Banchory used to run a 36 hole ladies open tournament on a Saturday which was always fully subscribed by the end of March.  When the new handicapping system was introduced numbers decreased and we eventually reduced it to an 18 hole competition in 2006.
Our open this year took place last week when we had 72 entries!  The lowest ever and certainly not worth the efforts of running it.
I think the cost of petrol and entry fees is a contributory factor but I also think that there is too much golf on the calendar.  Where once upon a time we only used to have ladies opens, we now have senior opens, ladies foursomes etc.
Ladies foursomes/greensomes is proving popular. Whether this is because your handicap  doesn’t go up, I am not sure!  I also think that when we changed the handicap system the Class 1 handicap players no longer needed away scores and this certainly affected our 36 hole open.  The wet weather the last couple of summers has not helped!
