LAURIE AND LORIE LEAD LPGA LEGENDS CHAMPIONSHIP
FRENCH LICK, Ind 2013 –
Floridian Laurie Rinker and Lorie Kane of Canada are tied for the lead
after the second round of The LPGA Legends Championship on the Pete Dye
Course at French Lick Resort
Rinker trailed by two shots after Friday’s opening round but moved into a share of the lead after 36 holes of The Legends Championship presented by Humana. Her rounds of 68-73 deadlocked her at 3-under 141 today alongside Kane, who moved into striking position with rounds of 71-70.
“The pin placements on the left sides of the greens with the wind blowing to the left made for a very difficult day, so I’m pleased with how I played,” said Kane, still looking for her second Legends Tour victory after nine top-10 finishes in 10 Legends events. “I hit the ball solid and I think the key was I made a couple of good saves today.Kane picked up steam on her last five holes, carding a birdie on the par-5 14th hole before lacing an 85-yard wedge shot to three feet to set up her birdie on No. 15.

The Canadian’s approach missed the 17th green
and she was forced to pitch over a greenside mound. She ended up making
the putt and saving par, which kept her momentum going. She finished
today’s round with three birdies and one bogey -- inching closer to a
win this season after losing a five-hole playoff to Rosie Jones two
weeks ago in Maine.
Celebrating her 51st birthday
in Saturday’s second round, Rinker birdied her second hole, but took
bogey on No. 6. The Floridian kept her ball in play even as winds
swirled, giving up only one more bogey on No. 15.
“It’s
been a while since I’ve played with Rink,” said Kane, who still plays
on the LPGA Tour. “She is a solid player who had a very good career on
the LPGA Tour, so I know being paired with her tomorrow will make a good
match.”
Val Skinner moved into solo third place one shot off the lead at 2-under 142.
Jean Bartholomew posted a 3-under 69 today to move into a tie for fourth with Christa Johnson at even-par 144.
Barthlolomew,
who won the LPGA National Teaching and Club Professional Championship
earlier this week in Atlanta, traveled to French Lick directly from that
tournament. She won that same LPGA T&CP tournament last year when
it was played here on the Pete Dye Course at French Lick, so Bartholomew
hopes to go two for two in Indiana.
Lurking one shot behind Bartholomew and Johnson at one-over 145 is Great Britain’s Laura Davies.
In
the four-player Super Seniors 36-hole event within the tournament, Jane
Blalock leads Sandra Palmer by five strokes going into Sunday’s final
round.
The
official senior tour of the LPGA, The Legends Tour is making its
inaugural appearance this week at French Lick Resort for the $500,000
professional event.
