The omens bode well for Italy’s Guido
Migliozzi, who not only extended his overnight lead but also enjoyed a
hole-in-one on day two of the Duke of York Champions Trophy at Royal St
George’s Golf Club in Kent, England.
On another testing day at the famous Sandwich
links, Migliozzi was the model of consistency as he carded a best of the day
70. The level par round left the 16-year-old top of the leaderboard on
three-over 143, four shots ahead of his nearest rival Jack Singh Brar, who carded
a second round 72.
Undoubtedly the high point of Migliozzi’s round
came at the par three sixth where he holed out with a seven-iron from 176-yards.
Migliozzi laughed when he said: “Yes, it took two bounces and went straight
into the hole, my first competitive hole in one.”
If the manner in which he made the hole-in-one
was somewhat fortunate, the Italian was good value for the rest of his round. “Today,
I think there was more wind than yesterday but I play so good, it was very nice
round. I played very steady golf. I miss only three shots all day.
The key is to avoid the bunkers and putt well,”
said the leader.
For much of the afternoon Migliozzi’s closest
challenger was Ireland’s Robin Dawson. The Waterford golfer reached the turn in
one-under 34 but then encountered trouble at the start of the back nine. Having
found the rough at the 11th, the Irish Boys champion shanked his
recovery. Unsettlingly he did the same thing at the next hole in a run of
double bogey, double bogey, bogey. After that, the 17-year-old did well to
compose himself and sign for a second consecutive 75.
With a two round aggregate of 150, Dawson finds
himself tied fourth alongside Norway’s Kristian Johannessen (76), while Blairgowrie's Bradley
Neil moved up to third after a 74 moved the Scot to within six of Migliozzi’s
lead.
As for tomorrow, Migliozzi will try to play his
normal game. “I don’t want to put myself under any more pressure than necessary.
If I am lucky enough to win, it would be my third of the season. I would like
to win because it is a very important tournament.”
Sweden’s Emma Svensson also enjoyed a great
afternoon on the Kent links after carding a fine two-over 72 - the best girl’s
score of the day - to climb up the leaderboard. The 17-year-old’s round came
alive on the back nine after holing a 60-foot birdie putt at the 12th.
A further birdie came at the 14th as the plus one handicapper came
home in one-under 34.
