NEWS RELEASE FROM LISA MICKEY
Dina Ammaccapane carded a 6-under-par score of 66 in today’s first round of The LPGA Legends Championship to take the lead on the Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort.
Ammaccapane, of Scottsdale, Arizona, played in her first Legends Tour event two weeks ago in Maine, and now holds a two-stroke advantage over Laura Davies, pictured, of England  and Laurie Rinker of Florida, who each shot 4-under 68 in Friday’s opening round of The Legends Championship presented by Humana.
Dina, sister of Danielle Ammaccapane, birdied her last four holes to secure the lead heading into Saturday’s second round. Her score of 66 is a new competitive women’s course record on the French Lick Pete Dye Course.
“I just hit it really close and my longest putt was maybe 12 feet for birdie,” said Ammaccapane. “When you play well, it means you didn’t do anything terribly wrong.”
Ammaccapane striped her driver all day, setting up short irons and wedges into the greens. With the shorter scoring clubs in her hands for her approach shots, the LPGA veteran was able to put herself in position to make birdies.
“I played smart,” she added. “When I missed shots, I missed in spots where I could get it up and down for par.”
After 14 holes, Davies held the tournament lead at 7 under, but she double-bogeyed the par-3 16th and took bogey on the last hole when she lipped out her putt for par.
Sweden’s Liselotte Neumann is one stroke behind Davies and Rinker at 3-under 69, followed by Canada’s Lorie Kane and Joan Pitcock of California, both at one-under 71.
Four players are tied at even-par 72.
The official senior tour of the LPGA, The Legends Tour is making its inaugural appearance this week at French Lick Resort. The $500,000 professional event will be played over 54 holes with the final round set for Sunday.
