NEWS RELEASE
The University of St Andrews and the Ladies Golf Club took great pleasure in inviting Scottish school girls in years S2, S3, S4, S5 and S6 to compete in our annual Schoolgirls' Tournament.
As
a club going from strength to strength we recognize the need to support young
Scottish golfers and to highlight both the academic and sporting resources the
University of St Andrews offers.
The
tournament took place over the weekend of 14th and 15th of
September and was run as a strokeplay competition, with additional prizes for
best nett scores, ensuring that girls of all standards will be competitive.
On
Saturday, girls had an opportunity to play in the fantastic weather on the
Strathtyrum course. Claire Robertson of the Carnoustie High school took the
lead after the first round, shooting a great score of 70. Julia Smith who shot
an incredible nett score of 63 led her division.
Unfortunately, Sunday
weather wasn’t as perfect as during the first round. First group teed off at
10.30 with a really strong wind and pouring rain. Despite the conditions all
the girls played full rounds and brought back some impressive scores.
Tea and cakes at the
Links clubhouse and a short speech by Zhanna Tarasko and Miranda Brain
announcing the winners were waiting for the girls and their parents after last
group got in.
Kirsten Purdie of Cults
Academy became nett runner-up and Nett winner was Jasmine Mackintosh of
Hazlehead Academy, who played very steadily through both rounds. Shannon
McWilliam became gross runner-up, shooting an impressive 82(par 74) on the
Jubilee in really tough conditions. The winner of gross division with the
excellent 74 and 83 was Kirsty Brodie.
