GREENVILLE, North Carolina – What has already been a successful fall season only keeps getting better for the East Tennessee State University women’s golf team.
Posting the best team round of the day at 301, the No. 41-ranked Buccaneers captured their first team championship of the 2013-2014 season by besting host East Carolina by four strokes in the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate at the Greenville Country Club.
Led by a fifth-place showing from sophomore Vivienne Chin (Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Malaysia), the Bucs placed three other players tied for 21st or better. Junior Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) tied for eighth, while seniors Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) and Lourdes Lopez (Cadiz, Spain) finished tied for 15th and 21st, respectively.
Wahl, Evans and Lopez all carded team-best rounds of 3-over-par 75 during the final round.
“What an incredible year so far for the ladies,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “The win today just confirmed the level of competitiveness of this team. It has been a three-week, non-stop tour and the team ended this tough stretch with a great win.”
It has been a grueling stretch for the Bucs, who travelled from Colorado to Mississippi to North Carolina over the last 21 days. However, Shelton said she believes the best is yet to come.
“I am proud of the heart of this team, and I know more great things are ahead,” she said.
