FORMER BRITISH GIRLS CHAMPION AMONG LPGA TOUR Q SCHOOL HOPEFULS

The second stage of LPGA Q-School
begins today at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla. The
field consists of 195 LPGA Tour hopefuls. At week’s end, the top 80 will
move on to Stage III, a 90-hole tournament at LPGA International in
Daytona Beach, Fla. All other players who complete 72 holes at Stage II
will receive Symetra Tour status for the 2014 season.
Here are 10 players to watch in Venice:
Laura Gonzalez (pictured): A former British girls championship winner at Monifieth, the former Purdue University standout, who hails from Belgium, topped the 241-player field at the first stage of LPGA Q-School. Gonzalez, 22, spent the summer technically an amateur but was “practising like a pro
Paula Reto: Reto and Gonzalez were classmates and teammates on the Purdue team that won the 2010 NCAA Women’s Championship. Reto is coming off a successful senior college season and two top-10 finishes in Symetra events.
Amy Anderson: The former U.S. Girls’ Junior champion (2009) won 20 times at North Dakota State and was the United States’ golden girl at the 2012 Curtis Cup. Anderson has a good head on her shoulders and a lot of game.
Xiyu Lin: The player from China competed in last week’s inaugural LPGA event in Beijing, the Reignwood LPGA Classic, and tied for 23rd.
Cheyenne Woods: Tiger’s niece was runner-up to Gonzalez during first stage, which is a vast improvement over last year, when she did not make the 36-hole cut during first stage. Woods spent a year playing the Ladies European Tour and called attention to herself during the Spanish Open, when she came out of the gate with 64. This could be her year.
Erica Popson: The Tennessee grad battled a thumb injury for much of her college career, but there’s no doubt she can play. Ended her time as a Lady Vol with five individual victories and a Curtis Cup appearance.
Melissa Reid: The former European Solheim Cupper and LET winner is back at Q-School for the second year in a row. The Reid of old has the talent to earn a card in December.
Lindy Duncan: Duncan was named college player of the year after her junior season at Duke. A smart player who has an even temperament and is good at thinking her way around the course.
Ginger Howard: Howard won this stage two years ago as a 17-year-old. She has been on the Symetra Tour since, with her best finish a tie for second at the 2012 Riviera Nayarit Classic.
Madison Pressel: The younger sister of LPGA player Morgan Pressel, Madison spent the past four years at Texas. The highlights of her career was a Big 12 Championship title in 2011.
