ALLISON FOUCH-DUNCAN RETIRES AS LPGA TOUR PLAYER

As the LPGA tour revealed Friday that it would add a stop in Grand Rapids, Mich., in 2014, Grand Rapids native Allison Fouch-Duncan announced her retirement from the tour.
Fouch-Duncan, who was sponsored on tour by Meijer Inc. – which will sponsor the new Meijer LPGA Classic, to be played Aug. 7-10, 2014 – made her statement following the press conference announcing the creation of the $1.5 million tournament.
Fouch-Duncan has been helping Meijer build a relationship with the LPGA tour and has supported plans to bring an event to the Grand Rapids area.
“Looking back, I’m so grateful to have been able to accomplish my goal of competing on the LPGA tour,” Fouch-Duncan said. “I recognize that I did not make this journey on my own, and I’m so grateful from the bottom of my heart for everything this city has done for me. I hope I have done you all proud.”
Buddy Whitten, Fouch-Duncan’s long-time personal coach and a Michigan Golf Hall of Famer, is a former Champions Tour player and former director of golf at Blythefield Country Club, where the Meijer LPGA Classic will be played. He said hard work was always the key for his player.
“She works harder than most golfers I’ve known or worked with,” he said.
Fouch-Duncan attended Michigan State University, starting her college career as a walk-on. She won three tournaments and ended her college career as a three-time All-Big Ten selection as well as an honorable mention All-American.
Fouch-Duncan, a member of the LPGA Executive Committee, will continue a leadership role in golf. In May, she was named to the Board of Directors for the USA Golf Federation and will also serve as Athlete Director for Team USA for the 2016 Olympic Games.
