Kane Wins 2013 Legends Tour Season Money Title

BOSTON, Nov. 20, 2013 – Canadian Lorie Kane finished the 2013 season as The Legends Tour’s top money winner. The four-time LPGA Tour winner recorded six top-five finishes this season and earned $103,333 in four official events.

Kane edged out Laurie Rinker of Florida in season earnings by $20,000. Rinker won the tour’s final tournament, but finished behind Kane on the 2013 money list.

“I played really well this year and against some very tough competition,” said Kane, who posted total season earnings (including unofficial events) of $117,083. “I know I always need to be on my game out here.”

Kane recorded one official victory this season at The Legends Championship presented by Humana in French Lick, Ind., to move to the top of the 2013 money list. That event featured the largest field (60 players), the toughest course (designed by Pete Dye), the most rounds (54 holes) and the biggest champion’s payday ($60,000).

In addition to that win, Kane’s other 2013 finishes included a runner-up finish in February to Michele Redman at the season-opener in Phoenix; a second-place finish in September at the Harris Golf Charity Championship in Maine; and a tie for second at the ISPS Handa Legends Tour Open Championship in Florida earlier this month.

“Michele played exceptionally well in very difficult conditions,” said Kane, recalling the 30-40 mph gusts and uncharacteristically cool temperatures during the final round of the Walgreens Charity Classic in Phoenix. “I was pleased to stay close and to put myself in the hunt.”

Her runner-up finish at the Harris Golf Charity Classic in Maine came after a close battle with LPGA veteran and six-time Legends Tour champion Rosie Jones. The two tied at 8-under par in regulation and were forced into a sudden-death playoff. Their five-hole playoff tied the longest in Legends Tour history, originally set at the 2005 BJ’s Charity Championship.

Two weeks later, Kane nearly chipped in for eagle on the 54^th hole of The Legends Championship in Indiana. She tapped in for birdie to win her first official Legends tournament (official tournaments include a minimum of 40 players contested over 36 holes), collecting the $60,000 winner’s check.

“I’m a member at Lake Nona Country Club in Orlando and they hung a banner at the club’s entrance congratulating me on the win," said Kane. "They put it right next to Henrik Stenson’s banner for the PGA’s FedEx Cup.”

At the season-ending ISPS Handa Legends Tour Open Championship in Palm Harbor, Fla., Kane had already secured the season money title. Rinker won that weekend at Innisbrook Resort, but could not overtake Kane for honors in season earnings. Kane finished one stroke behind Rinker in the championship that week.

Kane still plays a full schedule on the LPGA Tour in addition to her Legends Tour dates. She acknowledges that may give her a competitive edge over her peers on The Legends Tour, who often have large gaps between tournaments. But Kane doesn’t take her competition lightly on the LPGA’s official senior tour (for players 45 and over).

“I played against a lot of these women on the LPGA Tour and when I was a rookie, these players were winning,” said Kane, a native of Prince Edward Island, Canada. “Players like Rosie Jones, Laura Davies, Trish Johnson, Nancy Scranton, Barb Mucha and Val Skinner were always in the hunt and it’s not any different now.”

Kane hopes to see more “new” faces from the LPGA Tour becoming eligible to join The Legends Tour.

“I look forward to seeing Michelle McGann out here,” said Kane, who joined The Legends Tour in 2010.

Since joining the Legends Tour, Kane has posted 11 top-10s in 11 events and earned a career total of $126,166 (official) and $160,166 (total). Her first Legends Tour win came at the 2011 Wendy’s Charity Challenge in Jackson, Mich., an unofficial tournament on the money list because of a limited field size.

In her six tournaments (official and unofficial) this season, she recorded six top-five finishes, with a runner-up finish at four out of the five tournaments she played. In addition, Kane was a member of the World Team that unseated Team USA for the first time at this year’s ISPS Handa Cup. The Canadian was undefeated in her matches for the World Team with a record of 3-0-0.

The 2013 Legends Tour featured 11 events with purses totaling nearly $2 million.
