European teenagers Emily Pedersen from Denmark and Germany's Hurly Long headed the 16 to 18 years' boys and girls categories in the Doral Publix Junior Classic whose variety of age-group fields drew a total entry of 540 youngters from 43 different countries and 32 different American states to the Trump Internatonal Doral Golf Club, Miami in Florida.
Germany-based Fiona Liddell finished 30th behind Pedersen in the 16-18 girls' section while GB and I Junior Vagliano Trophy team-mate Sammy Fuller from Kingston, England finished third in the 14 and 15 girls' category.
European women's amateur championship winner earlier this year, Emily Pedersen, pictured, No 8 in the World Women's Amateur Rankings, was scoring a second success in the Doral Junior Classic championship. She had rounds of 70, 69 and 69 for a total of eight-under-par 208.
She won by five shots from American Megan Khan - No 56 in the WWAR - who shot 72, 70 and 71 for 213.
Pedersen had a +5.2 handicap earlier in the season. She played for the winning Continent of Europe team in the Vagliano Trophy match against GB and I at Chantilly and she also was chosen to play for Eruope in the Junior Ping Solheim Cup.
Fiona Liddell, daughter of Stephen Liddell, Falkirk-born club pro in Germany, shot 84, 79 and 77 for 240.
Fiona, winner of her age group in the recent Honda Junior Classic, also in Florida, had a nightmare first round in which she ran up an 8 at the par-3 13th by hitting three balls into water. She then had a triple bogey at the next hole, again by failing to stay out of the water at this hole.
Her dad said that Fiona had really played well, all things considered, and deserved better luck. Fiona now moves on to the Junior Orange Bowl at Coral Gables, Florida, starting later this week.
The German who won the 16 to 18 years' boys title at Doral was Hurly Long (St Leon-Rot) with ever-improving scores 73, 71 and 70 for two-under-par 214. He finished three shots clear of the international field.
David Carey from Dublin finished T15 on 228 with scores of 73, 77 and 78.
Another Irish competitor, Andrew Magee from Kilmaconogue missed the 36-hole cut with scores of 76 and 83.
Sammy Fuller had rounds of 71, 73 and 69 (the best last round in her category) for a total of three-under-par 213 in the Girls' 14 and 15 Years Section.
Winner was Mexico's Rino Sasari (70-71-70) for 211, a shot ahead of runner-up Diane Baillieux (Belgium) (68-73-71).
Sammy won a girls' category at the Junior Honda Classic for a fourth year in a row a week or two ago. Keep it up, Sammy!
