GEMMA WEBSTER KEEPS CALM TO SURVIVE Q SCHOOL ELIMINATOR
Glasgow's Gemma Webster, pictured above when playing Trump International on the Paul Lawrie Scottish Ladies Tour, kept her nerve over the last nine holes of the Ladies European Tour Qualifying School Pre-Qualifier "A" 72-hole competition at Royal Dar Es Salam, Rabat in Morocco today to figure among the leading 18 who qualified for the Final Q School at Marrakesh from December 14 to 18.
Other Scots who have also qualified so far - there are two more pre-qualifiers to come - are Heather MacRae, Pamela Feggans and Kelsey MacDonald.
In today's final round, Webster, with her father Alan as caddie, had a sticky first nine of 41 with one birdie, 2 pars and six bogeys.
But Gemma steadied up to return a 79, with eight pars and only one bogey over the last nine, to finish joint 14th in the field of 41. The leading 18 and ties go forward to the Final Q School.
Germany´s Leigh Whitakker was the winner with total of 300, eight over the par for four rounds of 292 (4x73)
Six shots behind in second place was England's Hannah Ralph with 306.
Said Whittaker:
“I was not really nervous as I had enough shots going in to it…Not as much as last year when I played for the first time Qualifying School. I played decent, just one birdie and 3 bogeys, no mistakes."
When asked about the whole week in general, she said : “My goal when I came here was to end in the top 5 and I just wanted to stay with every shot, and do my very best with everything.
"It was a fun week, the course played really long and I did not expect that the scores were that high after the first round, I did not expect that +3 was tied for fourth.
"I have just stayed really patient with everything. I am really short, so I did a lot of good “up and downs” and 26 putts on my third round.
"The key of this week has been my driver, which is very precise, but I am really good with shots into the green. So both parts have been the key. These greens are really tough.”
