SOUTH KOREAN GIRL LEADS WITH FIVE-UNDER 66
NEWS RELEASE FROM JUNIOR ORANGE BOWL
CORAL GABLES, Florida: South Korea’s Soyoung Lee grabbed
the opening round lead in the Girls' division, posting an almost flawless
5-under par 66 on the opening day of the 50th Junior Orange Bowl interantional golf championships over the Biltmore Golf Club course at Coral Gables, Florida.
A three-way tie on 4-under
par 67 in the Boys featured two of Italy’s top youngsters, Guido Migliozzi and
Renato Pastore and Chile’s Guillermo Pereira, Migliozzi's score considerably aided by a
hole-in-one early in his round.
“I didn’t get off to the best of starts,” Migliozzi said,
recalling he was one over par after his first four holes, but a pure 8-iron
from 160yards at the 14th (just the third hole in one in the Junior
Orange Bowl’s 50-year history) changed everything.
“I birdied four of the next five holes and my only setback
was missing a short par save on the 8th (his 17th) but overall
I’m very satisfied,” the 16-year old from Venice said.
“My whole game was solid
and I’d just like to play like that for the rest of the week.”
Pastore and Pereira were both rock-solid, the Italian
carding six birdies, the Chilean five, Pereira seeking to repeat compatriot
Juan Cerda’s victory in 2011, Pastore and Migliozzi competing to become the
first Italian champion since Marco Durante in 1973.
Canada’s Brooke Henderson,
ranked 9th in world amateur golf rankings, led early play, posting a
tidy 3-under 68, explaining that she was very excited to be playing again after
a two-month winter break.
The 16-year old reigning Canadian
Women’s Amateur Champion got off to a bouncy birdie-bogey start but quickly
settled down, consistently setting up birdie opportunities, although only
drooping two of these.
Lee, from Wanggok-Dong, South Korea, was equally impressive,
rifling flagsticks all day, while admitting that because she has limited
experience on fast-rolling Bermuda-grass greens, she hit numerous protective
approaches below the pin.
“But I was able to make many putts go in the hole,”
the smiling 16-year old said through an interpreter.
In third place is Japan's Asuka Kashiwabara who won the RandA Junior Open overall title by 11 strokes at Fairhaven GC, Lancashire in the summer of 2012.
Emily Pedersen (Denmark), at No 8 the highest world ranked player in the girls field and the current European women's amateur champion, had a disappoining day, by her standards.
She could manage only one birdie, at the 18th, in a two-over 73 which included bogeys at the fifth, 14th and 17th. She is lying joint 10th.
Sammy Fuller, England's representative in the girls field, is lying 31st after an 80. Like Pedersen, Junior Vagliano Trophy team player Sammy from Kingston had only one birdie, at the third, but double bogey 6s at the fifth and 11th, plus six bogeys, dragged her down to nine over par.
