JESS SCHIELE RUNNER-UP TO US CURTIS CUP PLAYER AFTER LOSING THREE-SHOT LEAD

JESS SCHIELE ... led by three shots with one round to play.

Jess Schiele from Grimsby, coming up to the end of her fourth and final year at Oklahoma City University, finished second behind US Curtis Cup team member Amy Anderson (North Dakota State) in the Kangaroo Invitational women's college tournament over 54 holes at Shoal Creek Golf Club, Kansas City.
To be honest, Jess should have won. She was the clear leader of a field of 60 players after rounds of 71 and 67 for six-under 138 over the par-72, 6124yd course.

Amy Anderson, pictured left, was three shots in arrears after scores of 69 and 72.
But the American turned it around over the final 18 holes when a one-over-par 73 for two-under 214 was good enough to reel in and overtake the faltering Schiele who signed for a six-over 78 and a final total of 216, two behind the winner.
North Dakota State scored a double whammy by winning the team title by four shots from runners-up Oklahoma City in a field of 10 teams.

EILIDH HOPING TO WIN "HELEN HOLM" OVER HER FAVOURITE LINKS

EILIDH BRIGGS ... bidding to be first Scottish winner of "Helen Holm" since
Heather Stirling in 2002. Image by Cal Carson Golf Agency

NEWS RELEASE FROM SCOTTISH LADIES
GOLFING ASSOCIATION
Kilmacolm’s Eilidh Briggs names Royal Troon as her favourite course and the +3 handicapper is hoping to start her home season in style over the famous Open Championship links at the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play championship.
The 54-hole championship takes place from Friday to Sunday, April 26 to 28 and has attracted players from all over Great Britain and Ireland plus from France, Belgium and Slovenia.

Following two rounds of 18 holes over Troon Portland on the Friday and Saturday, the top 66 players and ties will qualify for the final round over Royal Troon on the Sunday.

Briggs finished fifth two years ago and 17th last year, and she said: “I live just 40 minutes from Troon and I grew up watching the 'Helen Holm.' It’s a title I would love to win.”

A second year physical education student at Stirling University, the 19-year-old has already competed in Florida and China this year, but is looking forward to the start of a home stretch that also includes the Scottish Ladies’ Amateur Championship at Longniddry in May.

“I am really busy with University work at the moment and have exams during the Scottish Ladies,” she said. “But everyone at Stirling is brilliant in helping me organise my schedule.”

Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar), who was in the top ten last year, is another leading Scottish hope. The 2010 Scottish Ladies’ Amateur Champion is another Stirling student with a +3 handicap.

Amy Boulden (Conwy) defends the title she won last year and the field includes another two of the Welsh youngster’s victorious 2012 Curtis Cup colleagues from Nairn in Bronte Law (Bramhall) and Leona Maguire (Slieve Russell).

The last Scottish winner was Heather Stirling back in 2002.

South Korean-born Julie Yang, a pupil at Loretto School, Musselburgh when winner of the Paul Lawrie Scottish schoolgirls championship at Murrayshall in 2010, the year she also won the Welsh women's open amateur stroke-play, has scored her first victory on the US women's college golf circuit.
A freshman student student at Oklahoma State University, the 17-year-old Yang (pictured) spreadeagled the field at the SMU Dallas Athletic Club Invitational college tournament at Dallas.
She shot 70-68-72 for a six-under-par total of 210 over a 6301yd course, winning by seven shots with the third placed finisher 12 strokes in her wake.
Scotland international Rachael Watton (Denver), pictured left, from Edinburgh finished joint 10th on 228 in a field of 81 players. The Mortonhall GC member had rounds of 73, 76 and 79.
"I played two of my rounds with Julie Yang. She was brilliant. Judging by the scores, people must think she was playing a different course from the rest of us," said Rachael.
There were several other British players in the field.
Brogan Townend (Texas-San Antonio), pictured below, right, from Blackburn finished 23rd on 212 (76-76-80).

Georgina Mundy (North Texas) from Southampton scored 78-80-83 for 241 and a share of 42nd place.
Georgina is pictured below, left.

Emma Clegg from Blackburn, pictured below right, coming up to the end of her four years at Missouri State University, shot improving rounds of 90-85-79 for 254 and 69th place.
Team-mate Megan Thompson from Ballyclare, Northern Ireland withdrew after two rounds of 81.
Julie Yang's brilliant effort helped Oklahoma State (896) win the team title by five shots from Oklahoma with Ohio State (906) third, Denver (911) fourth and Texas-San Antonio (923) fifth in a field of 15 teams.

STEPHANIE AND SALLY MAKE TOP 20

Stephanie Meadow (Alabama) from Northern Ireland and Sally Watson (Stanford) from Edinburgh, two Curtis Cup players of different years, finished joint eighth and 16th respectively in a field of 90 players at the Ping/ASU Invitational over the Karsten couse at Tempe, Arizona.

British women's amateur champion Stephanie, pictured right, shot 74-69-69 for a four-under-par total of 212 over a 6,223yd couse, finishing five shots behind the winner, Alabama team-mate Emma Talley who won by two with excellent scores of 68-69-70 for nine-under 207.
Sally Watson, pictured left, who will complete four years at Stanford University, California, in a few weeks' time, had roounds of 72, 71 and 71 for 214.

Alabama (845) won the team title ahead of Duke (854) with third place on 862 shared by Arizona and Stanford in a field of 17 teams.
