CATRIONA IN DANGER OF MISSING THE CUT ON LPGA TOUR

Catriona Matthew does not miss many cuts on the LPGA Tour but this looks like one coming up ine North Texas LPGA Shootout at Las Colinas Country Club, Irving, Texas.
Catriona has made a brave bid to recover from an opening 76 but a 70 for 146 leaves her one shot too many to survive the cut - if the projections are correct.
Spain's Carlota Ciganda is the leader in the clubhouse on 136 (66-70) but first-round leader Caroline Masson (Germany) has still to complete her second round.
Moriya Jutanugarn, one of the talented Thailand sisters, has shot a 66 for 137 to be lying second at the moment.
Becky Morgan from Waes is on 140 with rounds of 73-67.

SUMMERS, TURNER KEEP SCOTS' HOPES ALIVE AS YORKSHIRE'S WINNING LEADS HELEN HOLM FIRST-DAY SCORES

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
It's 11 years since a Scot - Heather Stirling - won the Helen Holm Scottish women's amateur stroke-play championship at Troon - and at the end of the first day of this year's 54-hole tournament, the prospects of a home winner come Sunday evening are only fair.
That's maybe being a bit pessimistic because who knows what the next 36 holes will bring?
On a day when a blustery west wind made the closing holes on Troon Portland very testing - and very costly for quite a few competitors, Carnoustie's Ailsa Summers, pictured right, and Jane Turner (Craigielaw) kept alive a glimmer of success with rounds of one-under-par 74 and 75 respectively which will see them start their second round over Troon Portland in joint sixth and joint 10th positions.
England and Ireland competitors are hogging the leading positions on a day when highly-ranked players such as Georgia Hall (Remedy Oak), No 6 in the world, defending champion Amy Boulden (Conway) and Bronte Law (Bramhall) could not match the par of 75.
Hall and Boulden returned 76s and Law a 77.
Rotherham youngster Olivia Winning established a useful two-stroke lead with an outstanding score of five-under-par 70 (34-36). She birdied the first, fourth, fifth, sixth, 11th and 12th and was heading for a sub-70 score until her one and only bogey popped up at the 16th.
She leads from Northern Ireland's Jessica Carty (Holywood), Poppy Finlay (Vicars Cross) and Ireland's Maria Dunne (Skerries) from Co Dublin, all on the 72 mark.
Both Finlay and Dunne ran up 7s in the closing stages, Poppy a double at the long 15th and Maria a triple bogey at the 17th.
Rachael Goodall (Heswall) is in fifth place on her own with a 73.
Ailsa Summers, 19, who had birdied the second, fifth, ninth, 11th and 13th with shots dropped at the third and fourth, needed to par the last five holes to share second place on 72 but she bogeyed the short 14th and 17th.

Jane Turner, pictured left, also let it slip after she birdied the long 15th - her fifth birdie of the day. She bogeyed the last two holes for a par-matching 75.
Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) is on the 76 mark with a three-birdie card that included a triple bogey 6 at the short eighth.
Another former Scottish champion, Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) also finished on 76 with three shots dropped over the last two holes: double bogey 6 at the 17th a bogey 6 at the 18th. She had earlier birdies the first, third, ninth and 13th in halves of 37-39.
Other Scots on 76 include Scottish U18 girls champion Lauren Whyte (St Regulus) and another promising youngster, Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies), as well as Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) who played well in the Paul Lawrie Tour events last week, and student Iona Stephen (Ranfurly Castle).
Megan Briggs' younger sister Eilidh had a 78 after reaching the turn in 35 with birdies at the first, sixth and ninth. The Stirling gymastic student began to unravel with bogeys at the short 10th and long 1tth. She got one back with a birdie at the short 14th but then came five shots dropped to par over the last four holes - a bogey at the long 15th, a double bogey 5 at the short 16th and bogeys at both the 17th and 18th.
Jessica Meek, the 18-year-old Carnoustie Ladies player who finished within the first three in both the opening Paul Lawrie Scottish Ladies Open Tour last week at Dalmahoy and Ratho Park came down to earth with a bump at Troon Portland.
She signed for a 79 after having an eagle 3 at the long sixth and birdies at three other long holes, the first, second and 11th. Like so many other players, it was the last four or five holes that saw her come to grief.
Jessica dropped seven shots to par over the last four holes with double bogeys at the 15th, 17th and 18th and a bogey at the 16th.
Georgia Hall, on paper the best player in the field, started well enough with birdies at the two opening par-5 holes on Troon Portland, which are both reachable in two shots. She dropped a shot at the seventh but got back to two under par with a birdie at the long 12th.
It went pear shaped after that for the Dorset youngster with bogeys at the 13th, short 14th and long 18th for a 76 (37-39).
Defending champion and Curtis Cup star the last time she was in Scotland, Amy Boulden had halves of 35-41 for her 76 which also starated with birdies at the first and second and also at the sixth and seventh after a shot dropped at the third.
She lost it over the last six holes which saw her drop four shots to par  - at the 13th, long 15th, short 16th and 17th.
The field will be cut to the leading 66 players for the final round on Sunday over the Royal Troon links.

JESSICA LEADS SOUTH WEST QUALIFIERS FOR ENGLAND GRAND MEDAL FINAL

Devon 14-year-old Jessica Francis booked her place in the 2013 England Golf Grand Medal Final when she scored a two-shot win in the South West Region qualifier at Sherborne, Dorset.
Jessica, from Churston, had a net score of two-under 72 and leads 10 qualifiers for the Grand Final. She commented: “It’s amazing, I just can’t describe it.”
She will be joined at the Grand Medal Final at Northants County Golf Club on June 29 by: Sheelah Ayliffe (Bovey Tracey), Helen Kenworthy (Axe Cliff), Alison Hooper (Henbury), Jean Booth (Burnham&Berrow), Jane Southcombe (Lyme Regis), Donna Saunders (Yeovil), Lesley Pascoe (Stover), Abigail Turner (Okehampton) and Jenny Robins (Tidworth Garrison).
The event was contested by the best women club medal players from six counties: Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire. All the regional finalists had returned the best four scores at their club in the England Golf Medals during 2012.
Jessica’s round included a gross birdie three on the 17th and will help her cut her 13 handicap. The Brixham College pupil took up golf about four years ago, inspired by her brother who has a one-handicap. This season her target is to follow him into single figures.
This was the second of six regional medal finals. The South regional final has already been held and the others are: East on 30 April at Gog Magog, Cambs & Hunts; Midlands South on 3 May at Hazlemere, Buckinghamshire; Midlands North on 22 May at Radcliffe-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire; North on 23 May at Eaton, Cheshire.

CAROLINE MASSON LEADS NORTH TEXAS LPGA SHOOTOUT WITH CAREER-LOW 64

FROM THE LPGA TOUR WEBSITE
2013 LPGA Tour rookie Caroline Masson from Germany fired a career-low, 7-under 64 to take the first-round lead at the inaugural North Texas LPGA Shootout at Las Colinas Country Club in Irving, Texas. Masson made seven birdies in her bogey-free round on Thursday to take a two-shot lead over 2012 Ladies European Tour Rookie of the Year Carlota Ciganda.
This week marks the LPGA’s first trip to the Dallas/Fort Worth area in more than 20 years. And the reception was a warm one for Thursday’s first round with sunshine returning to the area as temperatures moved back into the low 70s following a short cold snap early in the week. But the traditional Texas wind was still on display Thursday, although it didn’t bother the first-round leader.
“For some reason I feel like I'm playing pretty good in the wind,” said Masson, who is a native of Gladbeck, Germany. “My win on the LET in South Africa was also in like really, really windy conditions.  And yeah, I'm hitting it well, so I think the wind doesn't affect my ball too much, and that will definitely help me throughout the week.
“But it's just also important to just make some putts on these greens because without putting well, I think you have no chance to shoot a really good round here.  So it's just all coming together really.”
There is a talented group of players sitting three shots back at 4-under-par, which includes current Rolex Rankings No. 1 Inbee Park. Thirty-year-old Mo Martin, who is in her second year on Tour, also opened up with a 67 as did 2009 U.S. Solheim Cup Team member Kristy McPherson.
Two-time LPGA Tour winner Christina Kim has gone through some ups and downs in her career over the past few seasons, but she cruised to a 3-under 68 in Thursday’s first round. She sits in a tie for eighth with a few others including 16-year-old Taylor Coleman of San Antonio, Texas who qualified for this week’s event via Monday’s High School Shootout.
Stacy Lewis, a Texas native, struggled at the end of her round on Thursday. The No. 2 player in the Rolex Rankings bogeyed two of her final three holes to finish at 1-over-par. Lewis must finish fifth or higher to have any chance at regaining the No. 1 spot in the Rolex Rankings this week. Of course that task becomes much tougher if Park continues to play like she did on Thursday, making five birdies and one bogey en route to shooting a 4-under 67. It’s also no surprise that Park, who is known as one of the best putters on Tour, was commenting on the speed of the greens as one aspect of the course at Las Colinas Country Club that she enjoys.
“It was quite different with the speed because it's such a difference from last week but I'm very glad that I'm playing the fast greens,” Park said  “I love fast greens, rolling greens. Last week was a very big challenge for me with slow and grainy greens which I struggle, but I was able to play better last week. So this is tough to adjust, but I love the greens here.”
It was a good day for some of the local players as well. Fort Worth resident Angela Stanford looked right at home on Thursday, shooting a 2-under 69 to sit in a tie for 11th. Stanford and the 16-year-old Coleman are the only two Texans currently ranked in the top 20.
There will be a cut to the top 70 and ties following Friday’s second round. As part of the “Shootout” format, there will also be a second cut on Saturday which will reduce the field to the top 50 players and ties.
BRITWATCH: England's Felicity Johnson is well up in the mix with a 67 but Catriona Matthew faces a fight to beat the cut after an opening 76.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE PAYING OFF FOR JANET MELVILLE IN ENGLISH SENIORS

JANET MELVILLE ... through to semi-finals
Picture by Cal Carson Golf Agency.

FROM THE ENGLAND GOLF WEBSITE
Nottinghamshire’s Janet Melville carries local hopes into the semi-finals of the English senior women’s championship at her home club, Sherwood Forest.
She won a high quality match against Lindsay Shaw of Derbyshire to take her place in the final four and will play Cheshire’s Cath Rawthore, who has reached the semis at her first attempt.
The other match is between defending champion Chris Quinn of Hampshire and Karen Lobb of Northamptonshire, who upset the odds to beat past winner Sue Dye on the 19th.
Janet Melville, the English senior stroke play champion, felt the pressure of playing at home during the qualifying rounds, but has relaxed into the matchplay and produced fine golf to win both her matches today.
Many of the holes were decided by birdies and honours were even at the turn.  Janet moved ahead on the homeward half, helped by another birdie on the 12th and generally steady play and good putting.
Karen Lobb (Northamptonshire County) produced the upset of the afternoon when she defeated former champion and senior international Sue Dye after an intensely close fight over the closing holes.
Karen was two down at the turn but took the lead when she won the short 15th with a birdie. She lost the next two holes, but squared the match with a par on the 18th and then won the 19th when she got up and down for par from a greenside bunker.
“It was an amazing game,” said Karen, who is playing in the championship flight for the first time.
Cath Rawthore (Sale) is a complete newcomer to senior golf and she, too, came through a close match to take her place in the semi-finals. Her opponent was senior international Roz Adams, who had a narrow advantage through much of second half – but Cath held doggedly on, holing good putts on 13, 14 and 15 to halve holes.
She was rewarded when they reached the 18th all square and she parred the hole for a one-hole victory. “It was a good match, a really good fight,” said Cath.
Sandra Paul of Huddersfield provided one of the morning upsets when she knocked out top seed Lulu Housman. But the double eluded her when she came up against defending champion Chris Quinn (Hockley).
Chris took her place in the quarter-final with a 5/4 win, which she sealed with a  superb four-iron to within 7ft of the pin on the 14th. “It was a lovely way to finish and tomorrow will be good,” she said.
The second flight semi-finalists are British senior champion Katherine Russell (Ryal Ashdown Forest), Denise Goodacre (Lambourne), Jeannie O’Keefe (Hankley Common) and Debbie Richards (Burhill).

SANDRA PAUL KNOCKS OUT TOP SEED LULU HOUSEMAN AT SHERWOOD FOREST

FROM THE ENGLAND GOLF WEBSITE
Yorkshire’s Sandra Paul claimed the first scalp of the English senior women’s championship at Sherwood Forest when she knocked out top qualifier Lulu Housman in a marathon match.
Sandra (Huddersfield) broke the deadlock when she parred the 20th to claim her place in the quarter finals. “I’m very pleased,” she said. “It’s the first time I’ve got through to the second round and it’s always good to go one better than before.”

Sandra was the 16th qualifier for the championship matchplay but was undaunted by the prospect of playing the top seed. “I knew I was playing OK and you’ve got to be confident or you might as well not bother playing.” Now she plays defending champion Chris Quinn (Hockley) in the second round.

Sherwood Forest’s Janet Melville kept the home hopes alive when she won the last three holes to beat Felicity Christine 1 up and reach the quarter finals. She now plays Lindsey Shaw of Derbyshire.
