ADVICE FROM SCOT WHO SPENT FOUR YEARS AT US UNIVERSITY

The Importance of Building Relationships
with College Coaches

Many young golfers/parents don’t realise the length of time the recruiting process can take (around two years) and end up rushing to find a scholarship in their last year of high school.
On Golf Scholars we have a number of coaches who are already tracking possible players for 2016!
Building relationships is important for everyone involved:
The Young Golfer – He/she may have aspirations of turning professional and playing at the highest level and the college coach will play a huge part in their development for four years.
So building a relationship where you believe the coach can help you learn, develop and enjoy golf is critical.
Many young golfers don’t send coaches enough regular updates of their performance, schedule or even statistical improvement. Engaging coaches over a sustained period will help build a relationship and help you decide if this is the best college program for you.
You may identify 10 different programs when you are 16 and build relationships with all 10: it is a very important part of the recruiting process.
Parents – Building a strong relationship with college coaches will help give you peace of mind that your son/daughter will be safe.
Important questions about accommodation, food, health care, day-to-day timetable and how safe the campus is will all be answered by the coach.
We all know they are unlikely to be asked by your young golfer but you can ask more and more questions that concern you during the recruiting process.
The coaches will be more than happy to answer these and importantly no questions is too stupid to ask.
College Coaches – They simply want to learn more about potential recruits. Being in contact for over two years will let a coach gauge how the young golfer is developing at both academics and golf.
It will help them to advise the golfer so that they are in the best position to attend their University. The coach is also making a huge business decision as a scholarship award for four years can be a massive investment, so they want to know as much information as possible about the young golfer.
The Golf Scholars website allows members to contact coaches directly whilst our recruiting library guides you through the recruiting process.
It helps you build relationships with College Coaches and make an informed further education decision.
We currently have a lot of coaches focusing on recruiting for 2015 and 2016 so now is the time to sign up and start building relationships.
