BROOKE MACKENZIE HENDERSON WINS "THE SALLY" BY FOUR
ANNABEL DIMMOCK FINISHES SECOND,
EIGHT SHOTS AHEAD OF JOINT THIRDS
Brooke Mackenzie Henderson, the 16-year-old Canadian champion and World No 6 female amateur from Smith Falls, near Ottawa, Ontario, added another title to her impressive CV with a four-stroke victory in "The Sally" - South Atlantic Amateur Championship - on a day of high winds and cool temperatures at Oceanside Country Club, Ormond Beach in Florida.
Seventeen-year-old England international Annabel Dimmock (Wentworth), (pictured right) with Scot Kelsey MacDonald, a former winner on this Orange Blossom Tour before she turned pro last year, acting as her caddie, finished a gallant runner-up, four shots behind Henderson who also won the girls' Junior Orange Bowl at Coral Gables, Florida over the Festive period. Annabel has a WAGR position of 377 but she outplayed all bar the world-class winner over the four rounds at Oceanside.
Henderson had scores of 67, 76, 70 and 72 for a three-under-par total of 285.
Dimmock shot 70, 75, 71 and 73 for one-over 289.
Then there was a yawning gap of eight shots to the joint third finishers, Welsh international Chloe Williams from Wrexham and Clara Teixiera from Brazil.
Chloe, in second place at the start of the final round after scores of 73, 69 and 70, was blown away to a closing, 11-over-par 83 while Teixeira made up ground with a 74.
Williams had a quadruple bogey 9 at the long 12th and took 45 shots for her second nine.
Dimmock's hopes of catching Henderson down the home straight ended when she ran up a triple bogey 7 at the 15th, having earlier birdied the third, long sixth - out in par 36 - 11th and 12th
Henderson herself dropped shots close home with bogeys at the 14th and 17th but she knew the prestigious title was hers by then. She had earlier birdied the second, long seventh, long 12th and 13th in halves of 36.
Stirling P.E. student Eilidh Briggs finished 10th on 304 with scores of 73, 78, 77 and a closing 76 which had birdies at the second and 10th but a double bogey 6 at the 11th in an inward 39.
St Andrews' Lauren Whyte (St Regulus) made the top 10 - joint 17th - with an 80 for 313. Like Briggs, a past Scottish U18 champion, Lauren had a triple bogey 8 at the long seventh and a double bogey 7 at the long 12th but deserves credit for covering the last six holes in one-under-par with five straight pars and a birdie at the 18th.
Peterculter's Rachel Polson, a student at Florida Tech, signed off with an 82 for 31st place on 319.
She had a quadruple bogey 9 at the long seventh in an outward half of 45.
+Editor's Note: Brooke Mackenzie Henderson is proud enough of her middle name to use it in her tournament entries. Does that suggest she has some Scottish blood in her veins from way back? We are on the case ... will keep you posted. If you know the answer, E-mail Colin@scottishgolfview.com
