CALLING ALL GOLFING MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS!
By JO THESIGER
For all golfing mothers and daughters, who have not yet heard of the mothers and daughters tournament, please read on!!
Every April, mothers and daughters from all over the British Isles descend on Royal Mid Surrey golf club in Richmond (Surrey), to try to add their names to the distinguished list of winners of the coveted Mothers and Daughters title.
Many of our most famous amateur golfers have partnered their mother or daughter to contest this historic event that was first played in 1932.
Pam Barton, who won with her mother in 1935, went on to become British and United States Champion.
While, former English champion Angela Uzielli, is without doubt the most notable winner, claiming an unrepeatable 22 titles with her mother, Peggy Carrick but sadly only one with her daughter, Caroline, before Angela’s untimely death in 1999.
Last year, the honours went to Glenna and Harriet Beasley from Woburn, pictured below, daughter and grand-daughter of former British Amateur champion and Walker Cup player, Sir Michael Bonallack.
It was Glenna’s third victory over four decades, having won with her mother, Lady Angela Bonallack in 1979 and 2000.

After a very close finish the Beasleys managed to win by a single shot from Gillian and Sarah Attwood of Gog Magog. It proved to be a special family occasiona as the Woburn pair were partnered by Glenna’s mother and sister, Sara Stocks.
The format of the Mothers and Daughters is 27-holes of medal foursomes. It is open to all handicaps but the top 64 couples are offered spaces. There are scratch and handicap prizes and an U16 Cup is awarded to the best placed U16 player.
You can enter with specific partners or be matched up with suitable opponents and if the golf is no good, then there is always a delicious lunch!
The event is being played on April 12.
