DOUBLE BOGEY AT 1OTH SCUPPERS KIM WELCH CHALLENGE
THERESE KOELBAEK WINS FIRST
EVENT OF YEAR ON
CACTUS TOUR
Copenhagen's Therese Koelbaek's birdies at the 12th and 15th after a bogey at the ninth were crucial to her winning the first event of 2014 on the Cactus Tour at the Foothills Golf Club, Phoenix in Arizona yesterday.
The Great Dane, pictured above, shot rounds of 66, 67 and 70 for a total of 13-under-par 203 to win the (estimated) first prize of $2,000 by a single shot from American Kim Welch (pictured below).
Kim, a winner 11 times on the US women's college circuit as a Washington State student and turned pro in 2008 in which year she was a winner on the Symetra Tour, shot 67, 68 and 69 fopr 204.
She would almost certainly have won but for a double bogey 6 at the 10th. Welch birdied the 13th, 15th and 17th after that "disaster" but she could not make up the self-made leeway on the leader.
Koelbaek and Welch fnished eigvht and seven shots clear of the field of 32 players.
Amateur Emily Campbell had a brilliant last round of seven-under-par 65 after earlier rounds of 74 and 72 to finish third on 211. She won the standard first prize for an amateur on the Cactus Tour circuit, a gift voucher to the value of $100. You would think the tour organisers could go a bit nearer the $500 amateur prize limit, especially if the amateur concerned finishes third?
