Seven straight birdies by Kent-born Lindsey Wright (Victoria) has seen her soar into a share of the lead at the Bing Lee Fujitsu General Women’s NSW Open at Oatlands Golf Club, Sydney.
Wright, who was out early in the calmer conditions, signed for an eight-under-par 64 to equal the course record, which is held by New Zealand's Lydia Ko and ACT’s Nikki Campbell.
Wright sits at 10-under-par with South Australian Stephanie Na with 18 holes to play. Na posted a very fine round of 66 in the blustery afternoon conditions to go with her opening round of 68.
The pair will take a one-stroke lead into Sunday over first-round leader, Western Australian Kristie Smith, who followed her 65 with a two-under-par 70.
Sharing fourth position at eight-under-par is Japan’s Noriko Kubo (67) and England’s Hannah Burke (68), while France’s Joanna Klatten (67), WA’s Jessica Speechley (68), Scotland’s Kylie Walker (67) and ACT’s Nikki Campbell (69) share sixth position a further shot back.
Wright, who has been as high as No. 12 on the World Rankings, fired nine birdies and one bogey at Oatlands Golf Club. Her round got off to a solid start with three straight pars, before she went on a rampage of seven straight birdies from the 4th to 10th holes.
Her lone bogey came on the par 3 12th hole, when she found the sand off the tee and didn’t get up and down. Another two birdies in her remaining six holes saw her sign for a 64.
“It was almost flawless, I had a stella day out there.” said the 2012 Women’s New Zealand Open champion.
“I started well, didn’t make anything on first three holes and then birdied four holes through 10. I was just going hell for leather out there, it was awesome.”
The windy conditions certainly didn’t worry the 24-year-old Na “It was a lot of fun out there”.
Smith, was very pleased with the way she played in the blustery afternoon conditions.
“I am proud of the way I handled myself today, I haven’t been in that position for a while. I got it going for 10 or so holes but struggled a little coming in, but that is golf.”
Other notable scores in the field include England’s Laura Davies. With scores of 69-70, Big Laura is at five-under-par total and tied for 12th position, while Sarah Kemp moved up the leaderboard with a 68 to be tied for 18th.
Winner of the British girls' and British women's stroke-play titles in back-to-back weeks last season, Yan Jing from China is leading amateur after two rounds, she is tied for 10th at six-under-par and one shot ahead of Minjee Lee and Su Oh.
The cut was made at five over-par 149 and 70 players including seven amateurs will contest the final round for their share of the $100,000 on offer.
Kylie Walker, bidding to follow up her maiden pro win in the last ALPG evet, is tied sixth with scores of 70 and 67.
Sally Watson is T21 on 141 with scores of 70-71.
Vikki Laing moved up to T39 with a 71 for 145.
A fifth Scot in the field, +2 amateur Chloe Goadby made the cut on 146 in T50 position after rounds of 76-70.
Chloe, now 16, moved from St Andrews to Sydney a couple of years ago. Her mum says this is Chloe's first competiton alongside lady pros and she is loving the experience.
Chloe played with Sally Watson for the first two rounds - both of them former St Regulus Club members in St Andrews.
Sadly, Pamela Pretswell did not make the cut but that's not surprising after her bogey-strewn opening round of 78. But she did look more like her old self with a second-round 72 for 150.
