JENNY LEE WINS LAKE MACQUARIE CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY-OFF IN AUSTRALIA
LAKE MACQUARIE WOMEN’S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL DAY “WRAP-UP”
Jenny Lee from South Australia won the Lake MacQuarie Women's Amateur Championship at Belmont Golf Club, New South Wales today.
She beat Hannah Green from Western Australia with a birdie at the second hole of a sudden-death play-off.
The day started with Green holding a three-shot lead over Lee. Both players had bogey-free front nines but Lee made three birdies to Green's one to cut the deficit to one stroke heading into the back nine.
Green shot two bogeys and a birdie on the back nine and Lee fired two birdies and a bogey to be level on five-under-par 287 at the end of the regulation 72 holes' stroke-play.
A “sudden death” play-off over holes 10, 11 and 12 would decide the winner. The 10th was halved. On the 11th Lee hit her approach pin high about 20 feet to the right and Green was long through the green but chipped to within centimetres.
Lee calmly drained her birdie put to clinch the title.
Kelli Bowers from the US equalled Lee’s three under 70 to finish equal third on 294 - seven strokes behind the play-off participants - with English mid-amateur champion Charlotte Thomas from Singapore who shot one under 72 in her final circuit.
Two Spanish players, Natalia Escuriola and Luna Sobron finished two shots behind in equal fifth place on 296
Belmont local Aliza Huff followed yesterdays “round to forget” with a one under 72 to finish equal 10th.
