FROM THE LAKE MACQUARIE
TOURNAMENT WEBSITE
The first round of the 72-hole women's
championship was played in relatively cool conditions with a testing north easterly wind prevailing at Belmont Golf Club.
Honours were shared between Australia’s Elizabeth Elmassion from the Australian Golf Club and Spain’s Luna Sobron, pictured, beaten finalist in the Ladies' British Amateur Championship at Machynys, South Wales last June.
Both had par rounds of 73. Elmassion bogeyed the first and fifth but birdied the fourth and had eight straight pars on the back nine before closing with a birdey on the 18th.
Sobron, the current Spanish Stroke Play Champion put herself under a bit of pressure early with a double bogey on the second and a bogey on the third but finished with three birdies on the front nine and parred the back nine.
Jenny Lee from Glenelg in South Australia and Hannah Green from Mt Lawley in Western Australia who carded four birdies on the front nine, are well placed with one over 74’s and there are a raft of players on 75 including England's Charlotte Thomas from Singapore, Australia’s number two ranked player Grace Lennon and New Zealand’s Munchin Keh.
Local hope, Belmont’s Aliza Huff is amongst fifteen players within a few shots of the leaders and certainly will put herself in contention with a solid round on the second day.
