AT HALFWAY IN PORTUGAL
Eilidh Briggs moved up to a share of fifth place at the halfway stage of the Portuguese women's open amateur championship with a one-under-par 71 at Montado Golf Resort on the Costa Azul, 30min drive south from Lisbon..
That put the Stirling PE student on level par 144 - six shots behind the leader by three, Spain's Silvia Banon Ibanez who has had a pair of 69s.
Kilmacolm member Briggs birdied two long holes - the second and 17th - and two short holes - the eighth and 12tyh. She bogeyed the third, 13th and 15th.
Scottish champion Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) repeated her first-day 74 for 148 and a share of 13th place.
The Paisley player birdied the fifth and 17th but bogeyed the seventh, eighth, 16th and 18th.]
Lauren Whyte (St Regulus) slumped to an 81 for joint 47th place on 157. She had a nightmare few inward holes - a double bogey 5 at the short 12th and a quadruple bogey 9 at the long 15th in a back nine of 42 blows.
Leading the English challenge is youngster Inci Mehmet with rounds of 70 and 71 to be sharing second place on 141 with Italy's Virginia Elena Carta.
Gabriella Cowley, chasing a Curtis Cup place, slipped a wee bit with a 74 for 145 but she is still bang in contention in seventh place, a shot ahead of Bethan Popel (72-74) and two ahead of Lucy Goddard (73-74).
Wentworth's Annabel Dimmock, whose runner-up finish in "The Sally" followed by victory in the Jones-Doherty Challenge Cup on the recent Florida Orange Blossom Tour, slashed eight shots off her first-day 78 (three double bogeys) with a two-under-par 70 in which she birdied the third, 11th, 13th and 17th. Pity about the bogeys at the 14th and 16th.
Annabel is on the same 148 mark as Ireland's Paul Grant (77-71) and Scotland's Alyson McKechin (74-74). All joint 13th;.
