CURTIS CUP SELECTION CONTENDERS' GOOD START TO 2014
HAYLEY DAVIS, BRONTE LAW FINISH 2nd
AND THIRD IN CALIFORNIA
Curtis Cup team place contenders Hayley Davis (Baylor) from Dorset and Bronte Law (UCLA) from Cheshire did their selection prospects no harm at all in finishing second and joint third in the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge women's college tournament over 54 holes at Palos Verdes Golf Club, California.
Over a par-71 course of 6,017yd, Hayley, pictured right, strung together rounds of 71, 70 and 73 for a two of one-over 214, finishing seven shots behind the all-the-way leader Annie Park (Southern California) who shot 67-67-73 for six-under 207.
Davis, a winner on the US college circuit, has an impressive CV but she has never been selected for a Curtis Cup match.
Bronte, who played in the winning GB and I team at Nairn two years ago, tied for third place on 215 with scores of 71, 72 and 72.
Former Scottish schoolgirls champion and Welsh women's open stroke-play title winner while a pupil at Loretto School, Musselburgh, Julie Yang (Oklahoma State) finished T23 in a field of 88 players.
She had scores of 77, 73 and 73 fpr 223/
Surrey-born, Singapore-raised Charlotte Thomas (Washington) had rounds of 74, 75 and 76 for 225 and a T35 finish.
Elizabeth Mallett (North Carolina), a former beaten finalist in the British girls championship lost a bit of ground every day with deteriorating scores of 73, 76 and 77 for 226 and a T38 finish.
Southern California (866) won the team event comfortably from Duke (873) with Arizona State (875) third and Washington and UCLA joint fourth on 881.
Next came Arizona (882) ahead of seventh place Baylor in a field of 16 teams.
