FORMER KENT CHAMPION PARS HER LAST 27 HOLES
Sian Evans, impressively steady performance
SIAN EVANS PLAYS LIKE FALDO TO
FINISH THIRD IN UCF CHALLENGE
Former Kent county champion Sian Evans from Gillingham, in her last year as a student at East Tennessee State University, is not regarded as a contender for the GB and I team for the Curtis Cup match at St Louis, Missouri in June.
Maybe she should be!
Sian was steadily impressive in finishing third in the University of Central Florida Challenge at Eagle Creek Golf Club over the past three days.
Evans returned scores of 73, 67 and 72 for a four-under total of 212 over a 6,349yd course.
She finished four shots behind the winner Fanny Cnops (Central Florida) who shot 67,70 and 71 for eight-under 208.
Runner-up, a shot ahead of Sian on 211, was Casey Kennedy (GRU Augusta) with scores of 68, 71 and 72.
Shades of Nick Faldo, Sian Evans parred every one of her last 27 holes in this tournament, the last nine of her second round and all 18 holes in her final round. Not one birdie putt dropped for her and, by the same token, she holed all the par-saving putts that cropped up.
She only had two bogeys over the 54 holes, the last of them at the 14th in her first round.
Aberdeen-born Gemma Dryburgh (Tulane), who is a GB and I selection contender after finishing a close-up second in the South American women's amateur championship in Colombia last month and, before that, finishing runner-up in the British women's amateur stroke-play at Prestwick last autumn.
Gemma, after two nondescript rounds in this tournament - 75 and 74 - caught fire in the last with a three-under 69 in which she started at the 12th and birdied the long 12th, the short 17th, the long fourth and the short eighth. Only one bogey and it came at the 14th.
Dryburgh finished T26 in a big field of 104 players.
Sophie Godley (Florida International) from Southend found her form again with a closing round of 72 after earlier efforts of 71 and 77.
She finished T39 on 220 alongside Melissa Siviter (Georgia State) from the West Midlands.
Melissa scored ever-improving rounds of 76, 73 and 71.
Dulcie Sverdloff, a Kennesaw State University freshman from Southend, finished T45 on 223 with rounds of 76, 72 and 75.
Meghan MacLaren (Florida International) from Wellingborough had a tournament she will want to forget as quickly as possible.
A winner three times in her freshman year of 2012-2013, Meghan never picked up the scent of victory in this one and finished 88th with scores of 75, 78 and 77 for 230. She had double bogey 7s at the long 13th and 18th.
Hosts Central Florida won both the individual and the team titles.
But it was close in the teamevent. UCF (857) won by a sinle shot from Iowa State with Miami third on 864.
East Tennessee State (874) finished sevent in a field of 19 teams who included Tulane (eighth on 877) and Florida Interational (T15 on 889).
