SIAN EVANS, OUT IN 30, SURGES INTO 4th
PLACE IN CENTRAL FLORIDA CHALLENGE
Contrasting fortunes for two English players in the University of Central Florida Challenge at Eagle Creek Golf Club.
In the second round, 2010 Kent county champion Sian Evans (pictured right) from Gillingham shot a five-under-par 67 to surge up in a share of fourth place, only three off the lead, while Sophie Godley, pictured below on left, a sophomore student at Florida International, dropped down to T45 on 148 with a second-round 77, six more than she required for the first round.
Sian Evans, a final-year student at East Tennessee State University, had a brilliant outward half of only 30 shots with birdies at the first, second, fourth, seventh and eighth. Then she completed a bogey-free 67 with nine straight pars.
On the same 148 mark as Sophie Godley is Dulcie Sverdloff (Kennesaw State), a freshman from Southend. Dulcie has shot 76-72.
Aberdeen-born Gemma Dryburgh, a final-year student at Tulane University, New Orleans and runner-up in the South American women's amateur championship two or three weeks ago, having finished second in the British women's amateur stroke-play championship at Prestwick last autumn, has not hit form in this tournament. She has has rounds of 75 and 74 for 149, sharing 59th place with Melissa Siviter (George State), a final-year student from the West Midlands.
Melissa has scored 76-76 for far.
Meghan MacLaren (Florida International) from the Wellingborough GC and a winner three times last year on the US college circuit, is another who has not really got out of the bit so far in this tournament.
Rounds of 75-78 for 153 and 88th place in a field of 104 is not really a true reflection of Meghan's ability.
EDITOR'S NOTE: One of the disadvantages of long-distance reporting on the US college golf circuit, purely off the GolfStat scoring service, is that the writer has no way of knowing if a player
is not 100 per cent fit due to injury or illness or there might be another explanation for below expectations form. And we can only guess as the weather in different locations. We do our best but we would do it a lot better if we were there in person!
