RAMSAY, KNOX EXAMPLES OF HOME AND AWAY COLLEGE SUCCESS

USA v UK DEBATE: GAVIN KNOWS WHAT

IT'S LIKE ON BOTH SIDES OF ATLANTIC

FROM GAVIN DEAR

With reference to the debate on Kirkwood about USA and UK universities.
Whilst I co-founded Golf Scholars (a US college recruitment website) I also played golf for both Lynn University (Florida) and Stirling University (where I won the British Universities stroke-play championship) so I think I have a good appreciation of both sides.
I spent four years at Lynn University where I benefited from fantastic facilities, great weather and a very good level of competition.
When I graduated I was unsure of my next move and discovered that my degree allowed me to apply for a Postgraduate Degree at Stirling. I think they wanted a minimum degree GPA (Grade Point Average) of 2.7 which is between an average of B and C.
I am not going to compare programs or standards etc as they are completely different and almost incomparable. What I will say is that both can work for the individual from a golfing standpoint.
A good example for the US College system is Russell Knox, now playing on the US PGA Tour, and Richie Ramsay who went to Stirling University and is a stalwart of the European Tour.
A couple of people have commented that degrees from UK universities could be more valuable in the future but most of the Ivy League universities have golf teams where you could study for a degree and play golf.
I also want to make the point that going to America can actually be cheaper for some students. Now that English students have to pay for their further education it is possible, through gaining a 'high percentage' golf scholarship from a USA establishment, that they would pay very little towards the cost of studying, room and board at university.
I have included a link to a Golf Scholars blog article
which was featured on Kirkwood golf and explains why girls can gain fantastic scholarships.
USA v UK debate really comes down to the individual's choice and one of the benefits of Golf Scholars is our low cost of £90 for a lifetime membership which allows a young golfer to join and discover USA scholarship opportunities and make an informed decision about further education without breaking the bank!
If anyone has questions about Golf Scholars, USA College Golf or UK College Golf I am more than happy to answer via email at gavin@golfscholars.com
Hopefully that adds to another constructive debate on Kirkwood golf.
