Grant Forrest, the 2012 Scottish amateur champion from North Berwick and a third-year student at San Diego University, California, scored his third win on the US college circuit in an exciting finish to The Farms Collegiate Invite 54-hole tournament at The Farms Golf Club, Rancho Santa Fe, California on Tuesday.
Craigielaw Golf Club member Forrest, who will 21 on June 19, birdied the first play-off hole to beat Kennesaw State's Jimmy Beck who had birdied the 18th hole in regulation to tie with Forrest at the head of a 69-player field on six-under-par 210 over a par-72 course of 6,947yd.
Beck had rounds of 71, 69 and 70; Forrest 67, 72 and 71.
The Scot, who played in the Open at Muirfield during his summer holidays from university last summer, got up and down from a bunker at the 18th to save par at his 54th hole for a 71 to earn a play-off.
Forrest had appeared to have several shots in hand of Beck after birdieing the first, third, sixth and long 12th, offset by only one bogey, at the second, but bogeys at the 15th and short 16th, opened the door for the late challenge from Beck who birdied the fifth, ninth, 12th and long 18th, bogeying the 11th and 16th in his closing 70.
Over the three rounds, Forrest had one eagle, 13 birdies, one double bogey and seven bogeys. This win could help Grant get into the Europe team to play the United States in student golf's "Ryder Cup" equivalent - the Palmer Cup.
The only other British player in the The Farms field was Seb Crookall-Nixon from Cockermouth, Cumbria, a student at San Francisco University.
Seb finished well down the field with rounds of 72, 81 and 75 for 228 - 18 shots behind Forrest and Beck.
San Diego University scored a double whammy with victory by the considerable margin of 14 shots in the team event, contested by 12 squads. San Diego totalled 860. Runners-up Kennesaw State scored 874.
+EDITOR'S NOTE: The Athletics Director at San Diego University has confirmed that this was Grant Forrest's third win, not fourth as our report indicated earlier in the day.
