GRANT FORREST FINISHES THIRD, TWO
SHOTS BEHIND WINNER IN CALIFORNIA
Craigielaw Golf Club member Grant Forrest, the 2012 Scottish amateur champion from North Berwick and third-year student at San Diego University, California, finished a close-up third in a field of 66 players at the Jones Sports Invitational 54-hole college tournament at Saticoy Country Club, Somis in California on Tuesday.
Forrest has won three times on the US college circuit, including his most recent outing prior to the Jones Sports Invitational in which he shot rounds of 75, 74 and 69 for a total of two-over-par 218 over a par-72 course of 6,985yd.
His 69 was the lowest round of the tournament. He birdied the fourth, eighth, 11th, long 14th and 17th but dropped shots at two short holes, the ninth and 13th.
He finished two shots behind the winner, Anthony Paolucci (Southern California) (70-73-73) who birdied the last hole for a 216 aggregate, one shot ahead of runner-up Riccardo Michelini (San Diego State (70-73-74).
Forrest will be rueing the double bogey 6 he had at the first hole in the first round!
Jonathan ("J J") Grey, pictured left, the 6ft 5in sophomore at Georgia State Univesity, finished just inside the top 20 in joint 19th place after rounds of 75, 76 and 75 for 226. Grey comes from Gravesend, Kent.
San Diego State (881) won the team title by a single shot from Southern California with San Diego (888) third and Brigham Youn (900) fourth in a field of 12 teams.
TROON'S EUAN WALKER TOP BRIT IN
PUERTO RICO CLASSIC
Euan Walker from Troon, a first-year student at Missouri University, finished the top British player in joint 38th place in a field of 75 at the Puerto Rico Classic over Rio Mar Country's River Course (par 72, 6902yd) at San Juan.
Walker, pictured right, a six-footer, shot rounds of 75, 71 and 72 for two-over-par 218, which underlines the quality of the field that he could not get near the top 20, even with an aggregate as low as that!
Welshman Rhys Pugh, a Walker Cup player in 2011 and a third-year student at East Tennessee State, finished T61 with rounds of 76, 73 and 75 for 225.
Josh Jamieson, pictured left, the 2011 Scottish boys' stroke-play champion from St Andrews, and a second-year student at Luke Donald's old college, Northwestern, Chicago, finished joint 67th on 227 with rounds of 75, 77 and 75.
Miller Capps (Clemson (70-67-67) and Robby Shelton (Alabama) (67-64-73) tied at the top on 12-under-par 204. There was no play-off.
They finished a shot ahead of Bo Andrews (Georgia Tech) (68-69-68 for 205).
Alabama (819) won the team title by four strokes from Georgia Teach (823) with Georgia (835) a distant third and Clemson (847) fourth in a field of 15 teams.
