MENIFEE, California – After three Mustangs were in the top-16 after day one, they improved their stock even more on Tuesday with three in the top-14 to lead the ninth-ranked Western New Mexico University men's golf team to the California Baptist University Invitational title.
"This was a great win for us," Head Coach Kent Beatty said.
"As preparations for the post-season programme begin, we can take a lot of confidence forward and put together a very strong finish to the campaign."
Sophomore Calum Hill from Muckhart, Kinross led WNMU to the team title with a tied seventh place individual performance.
He had scores of 71, 73 and 71 for a total of one-under-par 215 over a 6,588yd course.
Western New Mexico headed a field of 18 teams with a total of 872, three ahead of runners-up Colorado Christian.
Western New Mexico senior year student David Metz from Tucson, for some reason playing as an individual (which means his scores did not count for team purposes, was the individual winner by three strokes with rounds of 68, 71 and 68 for nine-under 207. He had 16 birdies over the 54 holes - guess he will be playing for the team next time out!
"I came, I saw, I conquered," Metz said. "I have been struggling the past couple of tournaments. Winning this tournament will help me to gain my confidence back going into the end of the season."
Thomas Neve, a second-year student from Epsom, and freshman Harry Wetton from Bedford, rounded out the Mustangs in the top 14.
Neve was a stroke behind Calum Hill in a tie for 10th place with scores of 73-70-73 for level par 216. Wetton tied for 14th on 218 (67-74-77)

Two more English members of the WNMU squad, freshman Anthony McGeorge from Holsworth, totalled 224 (74-72-77) and sophomore Ben Skinner from Hertfordshire and Loretto Academy, Musselburgh, tied for 67th place with 233 (82-73-78).
WNMU will return to action on April 7-8 when they will host the Mustang Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Ariz., at the Palm Valley Golf Course.
