LAREDO, Texas -- The ULM men’s golf team had an impressive performance in the Border Olympics, hosted by the University of Houston, finishing in fourth place in a strong 17-team field.
“We weren’t our best today but we played solid enough to finish up in fourth place. It was a team effort this week with everyone contributing,” said head coach Walt Williams.
The Warhawks carded an 8-over 584 in the first two rounds of play followed by a 295 in the third round to take the fourth place spot. The only teams to finish in front of ULM were No. 8 Houston, No. 14 Oklahoma and No. 25 Baylor.
Houston's title-winning effort was spearheaded by Royal Burgess Society member James Ross (pictured right) who had scores of 77, 72 and 68 for joint eighth place on one-over-par 217 over a long course of 7,375yd. in a field of 97 players. Houston team-mate Roman Robledo won by two strokes with 710-68-70 for seven-under 209.
“We beat several teams ranked ahead of us, including both of the other Sun Belt schools,” said ULM coach Williams.
Mason Seaborn shot a 76 in the third round to clinch an impressive sixth-place spot in individual competition, while Scots Calum Hill (freshman from North Berwick) and Charlie Macneal (senior from Ayrshire) kept the team going, each finishing the final round under par with a 71. Hill scored improving rounds of 76-74-71 for 221 and T26 placing overall.
Macneal shot 73, 80 and 71 for T37 on 224.
A third Scot in the Louisiana-Monroe team of five was Greg Smail (a sophomore from Musselburgh).
Smail scored 72, 76 and 77 for T45 on 225.
“We look forward to a couple of easy days and then head to Little Rock next week,” said Williams.
The team will make the trek to Little Rock for the First Tee Tournament, set to begin March 24th.
