PAIR OF DOUBLE BOGEYS DROP GRANT
FORREST TO JT 19th FINISH
Grant Forrest, the highest-placed Scot in the World Amateur Rankings - up to No. 39 from 51 last week, squeezed into a top 20 finish in the San Diego Classic college tournament, which ended at San Diego Country Club, Chula Vista in California yesterday.
Forrest, pictured right, had, by his high standards, disappointing scores of 74, 73 and 73 for a four-over-par total of 220 over a 7,033yd course and a joint 19th place finish in a field of 84 players.
The Scot, Scottish amateur champion at Royal Dornoch two years ago and a Craigielaw GC member, had two double bogey 6s over the 54 holes, including one at the 54th hole which dropped him down several places in the final standings.
San Diego State University students have earned the bragging rights over their great rivals, San Diego University in which North Berwick's Forrest is a third-year student.
San Diego State provided the individual winner in Xander Schauffele (67-71-67 for 11-under 205) and finished runners-up (859) to Southern California (859) in the team event in which San Diego (873) could do no better than fifth of the 13 squads.
Team placings are all-important to the US college coaches so you can take it as read that the San Diego University team will not be feeling on top of the world this morning.
