WHAT A SHAME FOR THE ORGANISERS AND THE COMPETITORS
EXETER INVITATIONAL STUDENTS'
EVENT CUT BY WEATHER TO 27 holes
FROM THE COLLEGE NEWS WEBSITEThe Exeter Invitational Links Trophy, planned as a 54-hole stroke-play tournament for university and college students at Trevose Golf Club was eventually decided over 27 holes due
to rain, rain and more rain.
The competition was reduced to a one and a half rounds (18 holes on Saturday, none on Sunday, and nine on Monday) after heavy rain and lack of greenstaff on course to deal with standing water on the fairways and greens.
On the first day most teams managed to finish their round in fairly good conditions to start …rounds were very slow following a society four-ball being let out before the world ranking event was due to start.
Student teams from all over the UK and Ireland turned up for the event which the ISGA team were defending
UCLAN (Central Lancashire) led the way after the first day, having played in the best weather….all to play for in the following two days, or so it was thought.
But, on Day 2 the forecast rain duly arrive , but sadly there were no green staff available to squeegee the two greens that were worst affected even though a number of volunteers stepped up to offer their help.
The second day's play was therefore abandoned.
Despite the best efforts from chief organiser Craig Townsend and his team from Exeter University the weather and events meant the competition had to be cut to a 27 holes, which was sad after all the effort put into running the event
With R and A staff present, this did not show Trevose in a good light. Craig and his staff were hopeful that the final day would be finished with 18 holes, but after more heavy rain and a biting wind the competition was halted after nine holes.
Congratulations to UCLAN - University of Cental Lancashire - for their team win. A great effort from Stirling (2nd) and ISGA (3rd) in trying to close the gap
