ENGLAND'S TOP SENIOR LADIES HEADING FOR SANDY LODGE, APRIL 22 TO 25
Issued 15th April, 2014
Top Senior women players aim for
England title
England’s top senior women golfers are heading to Sandy Lodge Golf Club, on the borders of Hertfordshire and Middlesex, to find their national champion.
The English senior women’s amateur championship will take place next week, from Tuesday to Friday, April 22-25, and has attracted over 100 players to do battle for the prestigious title.
The field includes every member of the 2013 England international teams. There’s also a strong local contingent, with 13 players representing local Hertfordshire clubs, including one – Moira Sleeman - from Sandy Lodge itself.
The defending champion is Janet Melville from Nottinghamshire (Image © Leaderboard Photography) who has won a total of three national titles since joining senior ranks – adding them to her three British ladies’ championships: the open, the stroke play and the match play.
Fellow members of England’s 2013 international senior teams are Caroline Berry, Sue Dye and Cath Rawthore of Cheshire, Amanda Mayne of Somerset, Chris Quinn of Hampshire and Katharine Russell of Sussex.
The local challenge is led by Hertfordshire’s senior champion Mandy Rooke (Bushey Hall) and by past titleholder Sandra Moses (Knebworth). They, like Lorraine Charles (Whipsnade Park) and Anne Anttonen (Porters Park), are familiar figures on the English senior circuit, while some of the other local players are new to this level of golf.
“I started playing in English senior events last year and just had the most wonderful time,” said Mandy. “I’ve tried to get other people involved and to highlight what’s out there for them and I’ve been absolutely delighted by the response for this championship.
“Sandy Lodge is a fabulous course and there’s no fluking it round there – whoever comes out of this and wins will be a real champion.”
The players from neighbouring Middlesex include Lulu Housman (Highgate) who, last year, led the qualifiers for the matchplay stage of the championship. Meanwhile Linda Hunt, from Newbury & Crookham in Berkshire, has the distinction of holding both the county ladies’ and senior championship titles.
The full field will play 18 holes of stroke play qualifying on each of Tuesday and Wednesday, April 22 and 23. The top 16 players will qualify for the championship matchplay flight and the next 16 will go into the second flight knockout.
The matchplay starts on Thursday and the finals of both flights will be played on the afternoon of Friday, April 25. There will be a consolation Stableford competition on Thursday, April 24 for those who do not qualify for the matchplay.
